The Witcher fans are about to enter an exciting new period for the franchise as CD Projekt Red transitions players into the Ciri era with The Witcher 4, likely to release in 2028 based on recent reports. Ahead of that, the new Songs of the Past DLC will give Geralt an official send-off before the new protagonist switch, while players are currently in the midst of their completely overhauled play-throughs with the new Remastered edition.
It’s an incredibly busy time for The Witcher on all fronts, with Andrzej Sapkowski also working on a new Witcher novel that could potentially arrive around the same time as The Witcher 4, based on his projected timeline. Beyond that, the final season of the Netflix series is set to air sometime in 2027, and while it’s been a divisive run for the show, it marks the end of yet another major adaptation for the franchise.
In addition to all these upcoming Witcher-related launches, fans will also want to mark their calendars for The Witcher: Legacy, which officially releases in 2027 and will take us back to discover what happened during the sacking of the School of the Wolf.
The Witcher: Legacy is an officially licensed, story-driven board game heading our way in 2027 from Go On Board, developed in collaboration with CD Projekt Red. Designed for one to four players, it can be played either solo or co-op and features a lengthy campaign divided across interconnected scenarios. Players control surviving Witchers from the School of the Wolf, exploring Kaedwen, hunting monsters, developing their abilities, managing resources, and making decisions that impact the later stages of the game.
More importantly for longtime fans, Legacy digs into one of the most significant events in Witcher history: the attack on Kaer Morhen and the decline of the School of the Wolf. The game’s story begins after Kaer Morhen has been assaulted and many of its Witchers killed, leaving the survivors to uncover who was responsible and why. It effectively turns players into participants in the aftermath, hunting down conspirators and figuring out what happened to the remaining Witchers.
Legacy takes place well before the familiar era of Geralt of Rivia and the main Witcher video games, with the assault on Kaer Morhen, (aka the Kaer Morhen Pogrom) became a defining tragedy for the School of the Wolf, reducing its numbers and helping turn its once-active stronghold into the one fans are more familiar with from the books and games. Sapkowski’s Crossroads of Ravens dates the attack to 1194, although Legacy belongs specifically to the game universe and its official materials simply describe the story as taking place long before Geralt’s era.
The format should also give that relatively unexplored time period more room to unpack what happened than a traditional standalone board game. Decisions carry from session to session, while character progression incorporates deck-building elements, skill development, investigation, exploration, and combat. GoB has described the project as one that will expand on an event that hasn’t really previously been explored, at least in this level of detail.
As for when fans can actually play it, The Witcher: Legacy is currently scheduled to begin shipping its English-language edition in June 2027. The project’s production phase is planned for January through June next year, although developers have cautioned that fulfillment dates can still change and this could vary depending on where you are located, etc. The current Gamefound listing nevertheless continues to show June 2027 for English pledges, with backers receiving priority ahead of the eventual retail release.
Overall, this is yet another huge new release that Witcher fans will want to keep an eye on, even if they missed the initial crowdfunding campaign. 2027 is going to be a stacked year for Geralt and The Witcher franchise, so best to mark your calendars now.
