Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, has proven to be an enormous undertaking in terms of adaptations, evidenced by the recent cancellation of Amazon Prime Video’s television series after just three seasons. Spanning 14 novels and a prequel, the books tell an absolutely sprawling tale that has captured the imaginations of millions of readers since The Eye of the World first released 36 years ago in 1990.
While it was a valiant effort, it isn’t all that surprising that Prime Video wasn’t able to fully condense the story into a digestible on-screen package, and at least part of its failure was due to cutting important details out of necessity, either because they weren’t suited for the medium or were simply too complicated to deliver on in a satisfying way. Simply put, it’s unclear if we’ll ever get a successful adaptation of Jordan’s Wheel of Time universe that tells the original story from top to bottom faithfully.
However, the franchise’s long-awaited return has taken that task to a completely different medium that arguably may be more suited to deliver on the epic’s promises, and it’s already a smash hit.
The Wheel of Time may have struggled to find its footing on television, but there is clearly still an enormous audience eager to return to Robert Jordan’s world. War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time proved that emphatically during its Kickstarter campaign, raising an incredible $1,166,993 from 6,156 backers before funding closed on June 23, 2026. Its original goal was only $50,000, meaning the campaign ultimately brought in more than 23x what Dire Wolf initially sought (via softonic).
Those are serious numbers for a tabletop release with a relatively substantial entry price, with the standard Dragon Reborn edition offered at $90, while the upgraded One Power edition cost $123 and replaced many of the game’s standees with 40 PVC miniatures. Crowdfunding success obviously doesn’t guarantee that the finished game will be great, but exceeding a target by more than $1.1 million is an extremely promising indication of the demand for a proper adaptation of the books.
There are reasons beyond the Wheel of Time name to be optimistic, too, however. Dire Wolf is the studio behind acclaimed tabletop properties such as Dune: Imperium and Clank! (both highly recommended), and War of the Dragon is being pitched as an ambitious attempt to capture the scale of Jordan’s entire 14-book main saga. Dire Wolf has described its goal as essentially putting “The Wheel of Time in a box,” incorporating characters and events from across all the mainline novels.
That said, it’s not a strict story-telling recreation of the books, as the game begins around the events of The Shadow Rising and carries the conflict toward the Last Battle. Its strategy systems combine area control, tableau building, and action selection, with the Light and Shadow struggling to shape their own version of the saga. Hero Mode is a more streamlined experience and can support four players in teams, while the larger Epic Mode is designed specifically for two players and expands the conflict with armies and greater strategic complexity.
Backers still have a wait ahead of them, as the campaign currently lists June 2027 as its expected shipping target, although Dire Wolf has cautioned that international fulfillment could extend beyond the initial U.S. rollout. The company expects U.S. fulfillment during the first half of 2027 and says all backers should receive their games by the end of that year.
Those who missed the campaign won’t be left hanging either. The standard Dragon Reborn edition is planned for general retail through participating game stores and local partners in 2027, although an exact retail date has not yet been announced. Some upgraded components and campaign exclusives will remain limited to Dire Wolf’s direct channels or crowdfunding, but Wheel of Time fans across the board will certainly be able to get their hands on War of the Dragon eventually.
