Green Lantern Officially Switches Genre After Lanterns Finale

DC’s Green Lantern lore has been challenged quite significantly in the finale of HBO’s Lanterns TV series, which recently aired its season finale and resolved the fates of all three ring-bearers who currently inhabit James Gunn’s DCU. All stars seem to be aligning for a second season to premiere at some point in the future, but Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart will at least make an appearance in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow before then.

As for whether or not we’ll see Green Lantern in a new DC game anytime soon, Injustice 3 seems like it’s the only hope we have, as the slate of DC games is fairly bleak beyond rumors and supposed leaks for the possible third entry in NetherRealm’s DC fighting game franchise. Meanwhile, and all the while, Injustice hasn’t actually gone anywhere, as Injustice 2 Mobile has sustained the brand on its lonesome and continues to receive content updates and active support. One of its latest updates, for instance, was the induction of a new Green Lantern.

Per Twitter/X, Injustice 2 Mobile did what neither Superman nor Lanterns could conceive of and simply added Guy Gardner to its roster of established Green Lanterns, which now includes Guy, John Stewart, Hal Jordan, and Emerald Green Lantern (Hal), with John and Hal being their original iterations from NetherRealm’s Injustice franchise. Clad in his white, green, and black Justice Gang uniform and proudly wearing his blonde bowl cut, Guy is confirmation that Injustice 2 Mobile has become the official home of DCU movie and TV series crossover collaborations.

Injustice 2 Mobile’s Guy Gardner is described as a Legendary Arcane hero who is touted as a great choice for solo raids. According to DC Games Support’s Injustice 2 Mobile 6.8.0 update patch notes:

His main feature is focused around gaining Green Lantern Energy while his Combo Meter stays high, then using his Power Ring to enter Green Lantern Form. In this form, his Armor-Piercing Basic and Swipe Attacks deal increased damage, his Specials are cheaper and drain Power, plus these effects can be shared with active teammates.

Sadly, with Clayface not being a playable character in Injustice 2 Mobile, there isn’t likely to be any crossover between the mobile game and the DCU’s Clayface movie, which will be released later this month. Rather, the next DCU crossover in Injustice 2 Mobile will likely be with Man of Tomorrow this summer.

Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor is already a playable character in Injustice 2 Mobile—the only version of Lex in the game, surprisingly—but a future crossover collaboration could take inspiration from Man of Tomorrow for Lex’s green-and-purple warsuit. Lanterns’ first season may have ended, but DC’s legacy goes on in Injustice 2 Mobile.
