Will Vaibhav Suryavanshi get a place in India’s playing XI for West Indies T20Is? Shreyas Iyer gives big update

India’s cricket campaign at the Asian Games 2026 ended on a golden note as the Men in Blue defeated Pakistan in the final to clinch the gold medal. The victory added another memorable chapter to India’s cricketing success, while young sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi also created history by becoming the youngest Indian cricketer to win a gold medal in cricket at the Asian Games. Despite being part of the squad, the teenage batter has not yet enjoyed a regular place in India’s playing XI, but Shreyas Iyer believes it is only a matter of time before the youngster gets his opportunity.

Shreyas Iyer opens up on Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s chances

With India’s upcoming home T20I series against the West Indies attracting plenty of attention, questions have naturally emerged over whether Vaibhav could finally get an extended opportunity at the international level. Iyer, however, feels there is no need to rush the 15-year-old into the playing XI. Iyer reckoned that regular openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson will get priority but highlighted the youngster’s personality and his presence around the Indian dressing room while expressing complete confidence in his future.

“He’s a very charming, sweet guy to interact with and good to have him around the dressing room. And I know that his time will come, because we have been playing with World Cup-winning openers right now, and they deserve the time out there, and he’s still in the 15. So definitely, when his time comes, he is going to dominate Indian cricket,” Iyer said, as quoted by Zee News.

Bright future awaits the teenage sensation

Vaibhav’s inclusion in the Indian setup itself is a significant achievement considering his age. At just 15, the left-handed batter already finds himself around players who have experienced the biggest stages in international cricket. While he may have to wait for regular opportunities, that should not necessarily be viewed as a setback. India currently possess established options at the top of the order, meaning breaking into the XI is naturally going to be challenging for a young player.

The most important factor in Vaibhav’s favour is time. Unlike established players nearing the latter stages of their careers, the teenager has years to develop his game, understand international cricket and learn from experienced teammates.

Being part of the squad without consistently playing can also provide Vaibhav with valuable exposure. Training alongside senior international stars and experiencing the environment of a major tournament can accelerate his development without placing unnecessary pressure on his shoulders.

Iyer’s prediction that Vaibhav will eventually ‘dominate Indian cricket’ reflects the belief surrounding the youngster’s potential. For now, patience could be the key.
