Croatian wanted by Premier League duo

The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s most interesting attacking talents after scoring six goals in his opening seven appearances across all competitions this season. Matanovic also scored 15 times for Freiburg last term, having joined the club from Eintracht Frankfurt in July 2025.

Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly keeping a close eye on SC Freiburg striker Igor Matanovic ahead of the January transfer window, with the Croatian international’s impressive form attracting increasing Premier League interest.

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal and Chelsea have both regularly sent representatives to watch Matanovic in action this season. Manchester United have also discussed the striker internally, creating the possibility of a Premier League battle for his signature if Freiburg receive offers in January.

Arsenal‘s interest is particularly intriguing after the Gunners failed to add another recognised centre-forward during the summer. Standing around 6ft 5in tall, Matanovic offers considerable physical presence while also possessing the technical ability and movement required to operate in a possession-based attack.

Chelsea, meanwhile, continue to monitor young players with significant development and resale potential. Although they already have attacking options including Joao Pedro, Matanovic’s age and rapidly improving goalscoring record appear to have put him firmly on the club’s radar.

Any January deal would not come cheaply. Matanovic could reportedly have been signed for around £30 million during the summer, but Freiburg are now believed to value their striker at approximately £50m following his explosive start to the campaign.

Sources close to the situation have also suggested Matanovic would be open to a move to England if a suitable offer arrives. With Arsenal and Chelsea watching closely, his performances over the coming months could determine whether that interest develops into a serious January approach.
