Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Ted Lasso season 4, episode 9, “Mae Rides the Bus.”A major character death has forever changed Ted Lasso.
After the Lady Greyhounds win a crucial game in season 4, episode 9, Mae Green (Annette Badland), who was in attendance, passes away suddenly. As the owner of the Crown and Anchor pub, she has been a consistent presence in the Apple TV series since season 1. She has had an even more active role this season as one of the foremost supporters of the AFC Richmond women’s team and by training Henry Lasso (Grant Feely) in taking care of the pub.
In an interview with Deadline, Badland teased what Mae’s death means for the season 4 finale, including what will happen to her shares of the Lady Greyhounds team, what’s next for Henry and the pub, and working closely with Feely. Check out her comments below:
Well, she had a very large pile of shares. I mean, they were about “yay high” (gestures to table height she sits at.) She uses them to good effect. Her instructions are for them to be used in a particular way that is quite good.
He is a delight. He’s a beautiful young man, and bright. We got on terribly well, and I shall miss him. Really, it was great having that element in the pub too. Another side of her. I can’t tease you with anything, I don’t think, but he knows what he’s doing now with a tea towel.
The latest episode reveals that Zelda Southport (Tracey Ullman) is the one who has been buying up the team’s shares. While Zelda believes she is on the cusp of acquiring the majority, there is a fan theory that Mae’s death will save the Lady Greyhounds. The idea is that Mae’s will dictates her shares going to Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham), which will end up ensuring that Rebecca maintains ownership of the team and cannot be bought out by Zelda.
Badland’s comments about Mae’s instructions being “used in a particular way that is quite good” makes this theory seem increasingly plausible, giving the character a game-changing and enduring impact even after her death, with the team being able to survive because of her actions.
Along with how the shares situation will play out, another major question heading into the Ted Lasso season 4 finale is what will happen to the Crown & Anchor pub after Mae’s death. Badland’s remarks about Henry knowing “what he’s doing now with a tea towel” suggests that he will help keep it running with the knowledge and experience he now has.
Henry is far too young to be given ownership of the establishment, but he will be invaluable to whoever takes over. One possibility is that she left it to the trio of die-hard fans who always frequent the pub after their years of loyalty and patronage, with Henry being the one to show them the ropes of how to manage things on a day-to-day basis. Another option is that she left it to Henry for when he is old enough to take over, with the trio or someone else serving as owners in the meantime.
While a Ted Lasso season 5 renewal hasn’t been officially announced yet, Apple TV executive Eddy Cue told ScreenRant in August that “it’s certainly good enough for that. So I think there’s plenty of stories to go on. We’ll show up. No worries.” Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) is still only in the early days of coaching the Lady Greyhounds, and with the team having just secured promotion, it feels like their story is only just beginning. Coach Alice Chilton (Tanya Reynolds) has also found her stride with the other coaches and players, and there is more to build on there.
Despite Mae passing away, the Ted Lasso season 4 finale and the potential fifth season are poised to see her legacy living on through the Lady Greyhounds.
