World Cup-winning England star joins Melbourne Renegades ahead of BBL|16

Melbourne Renegades have strengthened their squad ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27 season with the signing of a highly experienced England international. The move gives the franchise an established top-order batter and wicketkeeper as they prepare for their latest BBL campaign.

The new recruit has won two World Cups with England and brings extensive experience from international cricket and major global tournaments. His arrival also fills an important role in the Renegades squad following the departure of Tim Seifert.

The England star heading to Melbourne

The player joining the Melbourne Renegades is Jonny Bairstow, who will make his first appearance in the Big Bash League. The England veteran has played 100 Tests and more than 180 limited-overs internationals during his career. Bairstow has featured in 107 ODIs for England, scoring 3,868 runs at a strike rate above 100 with 11 centuries.

He has also played 80 T20Is and brings considerable experience of playing in high-pressure international competitions. The 36-year-old was previously expected to join the Melbourne Stars in 2020, but that move did not eventually happen. His switch to the Renegades will now give him the opportunity to experience the BBL for the first time.

A major addition to the Renegades squad

The Renegades were searching for a versatile top-order wicketkeeper-batter following Seifert’s departure, and Bairstow fits that requirement. He is expected to take the gloves while providing an aggressive presence at the top of the batting order. The England star also has a long-standing connection with Renegades high performance manager Clint McKay. The pair worked together at Yorkshire in 2010, giving them an existing professional relationship.

Bairstow said he has always enjoyed playing in Australia and particularly appreciates the passion of the crowds. He is also looking forward to playing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and entertaining the Renegades supporters. Head coach Luke Ronchi also backed the signing, describing Bairstow as one of the most damaging white-ball batters and highlighting his experience in major competitions. Bairstow will be available for the full BBL|16 season, giving the Renegades a reliable international option throughout the campaign.
