Shubman Gill produced a breathtaking batting masterclass in Guwahati, smashing the fastest double century in ODI history as India chased down a mammoth 406-run target against West Indies in the second contest of the three-match series.
The India captain remained unbeaten on 223 off just 133 balls, guiding his team to a remarkable eight-wicket victory with 39 balls to spare. The result gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and created a night filled with extraordinary records.
Shubman Gill rewrites ODI history
Gill’s innings was remarkable from the very beginning. He reached his 200 off only 117 balls, breaking Ishan Kishan’s previous record of 126 balls for the fastest ODI double century.
The 27-year-old hit 26 fours and eight sixes during his unbroken stay in the middle. His knock also became the highest individual score by a batter in a successful ODI chase, surpassing Glenn Maxwell‘s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup.
It was also Gill’s second ODI double century. He had previously scored 208 against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2023.
Gill is now only the second Indian batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple ODI double hundreds.
India complete a historic 406-run chase
West Indies appeared to have put themselves in an almost unbeatable position after posting 405/7 in their 50 overs.
Instead, India’s batting turned the contest into one of the most extraordinary run chases in ODI history.
India reached 406/2 in 43.3 overs, completing their highest successful ODI chase. It was also the second-highest successful chase in men’s ODI cricket, behind South Africa’s famous 438-run chase against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
Gill was at the heart of the chase, but he received outstanding support from Rohit. The former Indian captain produced a sensational century of his own, scoring 101 from 75 balls.
His innings included aggressive strokeplay and helped India establish complete control during the chase. More importantly, Rohit crossed the 12,000-run mark in ODI cricket, becoming only the seventh batter overall and the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to reach the landmark.
Gill and Rohit put together a spectacular 255-run opening partnership, India’s second-highest opening stand in ODI cricket.
Their partnership effectively removed any doubt about the outcome.
West Indies produce three centuries
The remarkable nature of the match was evident even before India began their chase.
West Indies became the first team in the match to cross 400, finishing on 405/7. John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scored centuries.
Campbell smashed 101 from 68 balls, Hope made 104 from 94 deliveries, while Jangoo provided a stunning late assault with 114 from 77 balls.
It was only the sixth time in ODI history that three batters from the same team scored centuries in one innings.
Despite those remarkable efforts, West Indies’ record total proved insufficient.
Gill takes India to series victory
Kohli contributed a quick 29 before falling, while Ruturaj Gaikwad remained unbeaten on 31 as Gill completed the job.
The victory sealed India’s ODI series against West Indies with one match still remaining.
For Gill, however, the evening will be remembered for generations.
He became only the second batter after Maxwell to score an ODI double century while chasing, the fastest player to reach an ODI double hundred and the owner of the highest individual score in an ODI run chase.

Shubman Gill, what a superstar! Since the first ODI, people have been saying that it’s unfortunate that he will never play as many ODIs say as a Virat to equal his record. I believe that he has the potential to go down in history as a great of the format, who created the maximum… pic.twitter.com/erSTocOBG5
