India are taking on West Indies in the second ODI of the three-match series at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. With India winning the toss and opting to bowl first, the hosts made one change to their playing XI as Auqib Nabi received his debut cap. West Indies also made four changes to their lineup, with Justin Greaves missing the contest due to a calf injury.

India made an early breakthrough when Prasidh Krishna dismissed Keacy Carty in the fifth over. However, the wicket produced one of the standout moments of the opening stages as Naman Dhir completed a stunning diving catch at cover point after charging forward to get underneath the ball.

The wicket came off the final delivery of the fourth over, with Krishna bowling a good-length delivery to Carty. The ball came off the surface slower than expected, and Carty went through with his drive early, managing only an outside edge off the outer part of the bat. The ball was dying in front of Naman at cover point, but the Indian fielder reacted quickly and moved to his left before charging forward. He stretched out fully and got both hands underneath the ball to complete a spectacular low catch.

The on-field umpires were initially unsure whether Dhir had managed to get his fingers underneath the ball. The decision was therefore referred to the third umpire, who checked the available angles before confirming that the Indian fielder had maintained control and completed a clean catch. Carty had to walk back after scoring 9 off 10 deliveries, with two fours to his name. The dismissal gave India an early breakthrough, although West Indies quickly responded through Campbell.

John Campbell leads West Indies’ strong response after early wicket

The early dismissal did little to disrupt West Indies’ momentum as John Campbell launched an aggressive counter-attack against the Indian bowling attack. The opener took particular aim at Prasidh, smashing 22 runs from one over with three boundaries and a six. Campbell continued to find the boundary against both the Indian seamers and spinners. Shai Hope joined him at the other end and helped keep the pressure on India as West Indies maintained a rapid scoring rate during the first 15 overs.

Campbell moved to 96 not out from just 60 deliveries, having struck nine fours and five sixes. Hope was unbeaten on 19 off 25 balls, with West Indies reaching 135/1 after 15.4 overs and maintaining a run rate of more than eight runs per over. With Campbell closing in on a fast-paced century, West Indies had recovered strongly from the early loss of Carty and put India under pressure in the second ODI.
