West Indies have been forced into a change ahead of the second ODI against India in Guwahati on Wednesday. Opener Justin Greaves has been ruled out of the contest after suffering a calf injury during the series opener in Thiruvananthapuram. The injury is also likely to keep Greaves out of contention for the third ODI in New Chandigarh on October 3. His absence is a major blow for West Indies, who are already trailing 1-0 in the three-match series after India secured a comfortable eight-wicket victory in the opening game.

Why is Justin Greaves not playing today’s IND vs WI 2nd ODI?

Greaves picked up the calf injury during the first ODI and was visibly struggling with his movement while batting. The opener was seen limping and required attention from the West Indies physiotherapist on multiple occasions, but he continued his innings and produced a memorable performance. Despite dealing with the injury, Greaves went on to score his maiden ODI century. He made 101 off 108 balls before being dismissed lbw by Kuldeep Yadav.

However, he was unable to take the field when India began their chase in the second innings. The injury has now ruled him out of the second ODI and leaves his availability for the series finale uncertain. Greaves has been an important contributor for West Indies in recent ODI cricket, scoring 528 runs in 19 innings since the start of 2025. He has also contributed seven wickets with his medium pace.

Jewel Andrew likely to open in Greaves’ absence

With Greaves unavailable, Jewel Andrew could be promoted to the top of the order to partner John Campbell. Sherfane Rutherford, who missed the opening ODI due to personal reasons, is also expected to return and strengthen the middle order. West Indies will need a significant improvement after their performance in the first ODI. The visitors posted 295/7 in their 50 overs, with Greaves’ century playing a key role in setting up the total, but India chased down the target with considerable ease in just 41.4 overs.

India have retained a strong combination for the second ODI, with captain Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli leading the batting order. Kuldeep was also among the key performers in the opening game and dismissed Greaves during his century-making innings. The two teams will meet again in the third ODI on October 3 in New Chandigarh before beginning a five-match T20I series on October 6. Greaves is not part of the West Indies squad for the T20I series.
