Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Lanterns episode 7

Lanterns has just released its penultimate episode, starring Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart as he closes in on Hal Jordan’s killer in 2026. The new DCU episode also features an exciting collection of Easter eggs, comic book references, and cool connections throughout.

As seen in Lanterns episode 7, John uses the last little bit of charge in Hal’s power ring to activate the former Green Lantern’s backup consciousness (aka the “Hal-ogram”). With the hologram’s help, the duo opens Hal’s secret vault and uncover even more mysteries surrounding Jordan’s death ahead of the season’s finale episode.

With things becoming even more complicated ahead of the finale (like a new appearance from Sinestro) and questions rising about whether Hal was even murdered at all, here are the biggest Easter eggs, references, DCU connections, and key ties we found in Lanterns episode 7.

Central City

Lanterns episode 7 opens with a flashback to Hal Jordan’s childhood, and we see young Hal in trouble for fighting his entire team during a baseball game against Central City. In the comics, Central City is the home of The Flash, the Fastest Man Alive. While the current status of The Flash and/or Flash Family in the DCU is unknown, more information will hopefully be revealed in the upcoming DCU series The People v. Gorilla Grodd (seeing as how Grodd is a classic Flash foe).

Martin’s Jacket

Defended by his father, Hal’s dad, Martin Jordan, is shown on-screen for the first time in the DCU, played by actor Jake B. Miller. Shown wearing a classic brown bomber jacket, Hal comes to inherit the jacket from his father in the comics. While Kyle Chandler’s Hal isn’t shown wearing the same jacket in the show’s 2016 or 2026 timelines, footage from Hal’s first interview shown earlier in the DCU series did show Jordan wearing the same jacket (or at least one very similar).

Holding Onto The Ball

Hal’s refusal to give up the game ball as a kid ties perfectly to the 2016 timeline and his determination to hold onto his ring and keep his role as Earth’s Green Lantern. It doesn’t matter if the effort is exhausting; Hal’s going to do everything he can to hold onto the ball and/or ring.

From Coast City To Japan

Confirming his status as a pilot for Ferris Air in Coast City, Martin’s job is the same as it was in the comics before his tragic accident flying one of their test planes. Not only is the shoutout to Hal’s home of Coast City pretty cool, but it’s also notable, as we were just introduced to Carol Ferris in Lanterns episode 6 during Hal’s memorial. Likewise, a commercial Ferris Air jet has been featured in trailers for the upcoming Clayface movie.

What Was Hal’s Funeral Like?

When the Halogram wants to know about his funeral, John lies and says it was a massive affair, rather than it being just himself, Sheriff Kane, and Carol in attendance. Talking about the Guardians and the entire Lantern Corps showing up to pay their respects, it’s worth noting that Hal’s funeral in the comics was indeed a much bigger event with multiple attendees.

Squirrel

The “squirrel” gets another mention in Lanterns episode 7, the classic member of the Green Lantern Corps from the comics who does very much resembles a large squirrel from Earth. Furthermore, the alien squirrel in question is likely either B’dg or C’hp, as there have been two squirrel Green Lanterns in the established comic book canon.

Mogo

John continues his lies about Hal’s funeral, claiming to the Halogram that he and Mogo stood side by side….not knowing that Mogo is a giant sentient planet. This is Lanterns’ second reference to the classic member of the Green Lantern Corps from the comics, as the first was the reveal that Hal’s password for his pocket universe locker was: “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize,” the name of the DC Comics story featuring the planet’s first appearance on the page.

John 16:13

While John Stewart is turning to different stations on the radio in Lanterns episode 7, the Bible reference John 16:13 is heard: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” As such, it’s a rather fitting verse given John’s determination to uncover the truth about Hal.

OutKast

Because the Halogram is summoned whenever John thinks about him, John has to keep his mind distracted and occupied to get the Halogram to go away, prompting him to sing aloud the lyrics to OutKast’s “SpottieOttieDopaliscious”. It’s a pretty fitting song choice, seeing as how OutKast was the title of Lanterns episode 3, with several of the songs being featured as favorites of John and his brothers (while also connecting to John’s outcast status as their parents’ “Chosen One” to become a Green Lantern.

Billy’s Bringing The Dip

While this likely wasn’t an intentional reference, I couldn’t help but smile when Billy Macon mentions that he’s bringing dip to Noah’s party, seeing as how one of actor Jason Ritter’s most beloved voice roles is Dipper Pines in the animated series Gravity Falls.
