Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have entered a new chapter ahead of IPL 2027, with former India pacer Zaheer Khan appointed as their new head coach. The move ended Stephen Fleming‘s long association with the franchise and immediately sparked questions about how the decision was reached.

One of the biggest talking points was the reported involvement of MS Dhoni in Zaheer’s appointment. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan has now confirmed that Dhoni was indeed part of the decision-making process, putting an end to speculation surrounding the coaching change.

Was MS Dhoni involved in Zaheer Khan’s appointment as CSK head coach?

According to Kasi Viswanathan, the decision was taken by CSK’s cricket management, with Dhoni playing a role in the discussions.

Viswanathan explained that the management wanted Zaheer because of his extensive cricket and IPL experience. He also confirmed that Dhoni was involved when the final decision was made.

Dhoni suggested Zaheer’s name, with owner Rupa Gurunath and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad agreeing that the former India pacer was suited to the role.

“See, basically, the cricket management took this decision. They wanted Mr. Zaheer Khan as the head coach based on his experience. He has played over 100 games in IPL and was an all-round player.

“So, they preferred that he will be a good option for them and we abided by what the cricket management wanted. Definitely, he (MS Dhoni) was part of the decision when this was taken. Without his advice, we don’t do anything,” Viswanathan was quoted as saying to IANS.

This clarification is significant because Dhoni has remained an influential figure within the CSK setup even after handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj.

Why did CSK choose Zaheer?

Zaheer brings a considerable amount of playing and IPL experience to the position.

The former left-arm fast bowler played 100 IPL matches and took 102 wickets during his career. He represented Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in the competition.

After retiring from international cricket, Zaheer moved into coaching and mentoring roles. He worked with Mumbai Indians as Director of Cricket Operations and later Head of Global Development before joining Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a mentor.

That background gave him experience in player development, recruitment and franchise operations.

CSK’s management has also highlighted Zaheer’s work with young cricketers, particularly fast bowlers, as one of the reasons for bringing him into the setup.

Zaheer’s appointment marks the end of an 18-year association between Fleming and CSK.

Fleming had been at the helm since 2009 and was part of CSK’s five IPL title-winning campaigns. His departure followed a difficult period for the franchise, which missed the playoffs for three consecutive seasons.

CSK subsequently began searching for a replacement, with several names reportedly linked to the vacancy before the franchise officially confirmed Zaheer.

The appointment also represents a change in coaching direction, with CSK moving from a highly experienced overseas head coach to an Indian coach with substantial IPL and international experience.

Zaheer gets complete control over CSK’s support staff

Another important detail surrounding Zaheer’s appointment is the authority he will have over his coaching team.

Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Zaheer will decide the support staff that works alongside him. CSK’s existing setup includes Mike Hussey, Sridharan Sriram, Rajiv Kumar, Eric Simons and James Foster.

This gives Zaheer an opportunity to build a coaching structure suited to his methods and priorities ahead of the 2027 season.

His immediate responsibilities will include working with the franchise on squad planning, player retention and recruitment ahead of the upcoming auction cycle.

Zaheer’s first head-coaching assignment

Although Zaheer has extensive experience as a player, mentor and cricket administrator, CSK will be his first head-coaching role.

His challenge will be significant. The franchise will enter IPL 2027 looking to rebuild momentum after three consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance.

Zaheer will now have the opportunity to shape the team’s cricketing direction, while Dhoni’s involvement in his appointment provides an important link between CSK’s established leadership structure and its new coaching era.

For the Yellow Brigade, the partnership between Zaheer, Ruturaj and the experienced CSK management group will be one of the key storylines heading into IPL 2027.
