If Neagley Season 2 Happens, It Must Break The One Rule Reacher Never Will

The news that Reacher‘s best supporting character, Frances Neagley, was getting her own spinoff series was met with some skepticism. If Neagley was going to be another version of Reacher, just with a more complex and less muscular character, this was not the most compelling reason to watch the series. On the other hand, if Neagley split from Reacher completely, this could result in the franchise losing viewers. However, with a 93% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Neagley has immediately established itself as being different from Reacher, and well worth watching.

Even before Neagley broke Reacher‘s Rotten Tomatoes record, the show’s plot established it as different, connecting Neagley to her past by centering on an old friend, whose apparent suicide was doubted by his loved ones, including Neagley. While Reacher is reassuringly predictable, Neagley has had the chance to branch out by breaking more than Reacher‘s statistics. The spinoff has already broken some of Reacher‘s rules, including Neagley‘s meta cameo that would never have happened in the original show. With Reacher leaving town again in season 4’s finale, this sets up the rule that Neagley season 2 must break next.

Neagley Season 2 Must Keep The Same Supporting Cast

Reacher is a drifter, with each book taking him to a new location, where the longest relationship that he maintains is with his toothbrush. The TV adaptation has made some changes to the Reacher books, notably bringing back fan favorite characters for cameos and references, like Oscar Finlay’s surprise appearance, Reacher’s reference to a past season character, and giving Frances Neagley a larger role. However, while Reacher and Neagley’s friendship is a highlight of the original series, each season ends the same way, with Reacher going back on the road and leaving the season’s supporting characters behind.

If Neagley has a second season, it must break this rule. One issue with Reacher is the fact that some of the supporting characters are harder to care about as we know that they won’t be back, while Neagley‘s have been excellent, with characters like Keno becoming instant fan favorites. Neagley’s “found family” worked so well together that season 2 must expand on this, developing their relationship. Neagley must remain her own character separate from Reacher, but the spinoff having its own version of the 110th Special Investigators could work, having already established that you do not mess with them.

It was expected that Alan Ritchson would appear in the spinoff, with the wait smartly paying off in the final episode after Neagley had established itself as an equally good TV show. Still, the scene offered more surprises as Neagley broke her own rule with Alan Ritchson’s cameo. With Neagley having haphephobia (the fear of being touched,) the fact that she offered Reacher a handshake was a major development for her, signifying that the next seasons could continue her character journey, and with her support network established, they should continue alongside her.

It Makes Sense For Neagley To Not Rotate Cast Members

While the four Reacher seasons have now established that the titular character does have friends in his former colleagues and, of course, in Neagley, he drifts because he wants freedom from the rules and obligations of everyday life, which explains the constantly rotating cast. With Neagley setting up a base in Chicago as the head of her own firm, it makes sense for her to remain there, at least in part. Neagley could take on a new case with every season, like Reacher, but the home base means that she must have at least a few regular contacts.

Not only does Neagley‘s ending set this up, with Neagley, Hudson, Renee, and Keno reopening the detective agency, but the show’s co-creator, Nicholas Wootton, told Collider that the storylines for Neagley season 2 are already written, and these include the first season’s supporting characters. Wootton described this dynamic and their future, saying, “ultimately, they become her built family. That would obviously continue into Season 2, should we be so lucky.” With Neagley making such an impression during Reacher, giving her a team and a multi-season show of her own can finally do her justice.
