Zach Cregger’s New Sci-Fi Movie Is The Next 2001: A Space Odyssey

Zach Cregger transitions to science fiction after his major winning streak in horror.

Cregger is preparing to venture into science fiction after an impressive lineup of horror box office hits. According to the Resident Evil and Weapons director, his upcoming film, The Flood, could be reminiscent of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. While Cregger is careful not to oversell his new science fiction project by putting it in the same league as Kubrick’s space epic, he has revealed that the two movies share some important elements.

Cregger has remained relatively discreet about the actual story of The Flood. However, in an interview with Men’s Health, he says that audiences shouldn’t expect a conventional science fiction story. Instead, the director explained that he is doing something more experimental while incorporating elements that define the genre. Cregger also explains that he will be exploring ideas that are personal to him.

Despite the film being shrouded in mystery, Cregger’s comparison to 2001: A Space Odyssey gives audiences an idea of what to expect without giving away any specific details about the plot. Cregger appears to be more interested in using the genre to explore bigger questions, with the director hinting at the shared themes that The Flood and 2001: A Space Odyssey have.

The Flood comes at what is arguably the peak of Cregger’s career. The director has had several hit movies under his belt within the last few years, such as Weapons, a film that not only became a major commercial and critical success but also one that many believed breathed new life into the genre. The movie also achieved the honor of being nominated for several Academy Awards and winning one, which is rare for horror films.

Cregger’s most recent hit was Resident Evil, which is based on the beloved video game franchise. The movie is already one of the most successful video game adaptations ever. The film brought in several new elements into the world of Resident Evil. Most notably, despite taking place in the same timeline as Resident Evil 2, the movie featured all original characters and doesn’t even mention any of the video game’s iconic characters.

Cregger’s upcoming science fiction film The Flood will be released in theaters on August 11, 2028.
