Cherries claim maiden Europa League win

Bournemouth announced themselves on the European stage with a stunning debut Europa League win against Sociedad.

The Cherries were in League Two as recently as 2010 but are in Europe after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.

And Marco Rose’s men made a flying start en route to a famous win.

Jus 11 minutes were on the clock when Adrien Truffert burst up the left wing and played in a delicious cross into the path of Justin Kluivert.

The striker was originally ruled offside as he side-footed home but after a lengthy VAR check the goal was given.

Brazil winger Rayan then had them 2-0 up inside 20 minutes with a cracking header from Alex Scott’s wonderful run and cross.

Evanilson headed against the post as the Premier League side bossed the first half.

Sociedad had to improve and did, with Sergio Gomez reducing the lead with a cross that beat goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic and drifted into the far corner.

Scotland’s Ben Gannon-Doak had a chance to wrap up the win on the break but Bournemouth were able to hang on for a famous win on the road thanks to two fine late saves from Petrovic.
