Former England cricketers Michael Vaughan, Alastair Cook and David Lloyd have named their combined all-time greatest Test XI, bringing together some of the most celebrated players in the history of the format. The lineup features legendary names from several Test-playing nations, including India, Australia, West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. However, despite their remarkable records, neither Virat Kohli nor Rahul Dravid made the cut.

Matthew Hayden and Geoffrey Boycott lead star-studded batting lineup

The three former England cricketers opted for a formidable opening combination of Geoffrey Boycott and Matthew Hayden. Both left behind outstanding records in Test cricket, with Boycott accumulating 8,114 runs and 22 centuries, while Hayden finished with 8,625 runs and 30 hundreds.

Jacques Kallis was selected at No.3, adding further balance to an already powerful top order. The South African all-rounder scored more than 13,000 Test runs, including 45 centuries, and also claimed 292 wickets during his 166-match career.

West Indies great Brian Lara and India’s Sachin Tendulkar occupied the next two positions. Tendulkar remains the highest run-scorer in Test history, having amassed almost 16,000 runs and a record 51 centuries. Lara, meanwhile, ranks eighth on the all-time Test run-scoring list with 11,953 runs and 34 hundreds.

Garfield Sobers was chosen at No.6, giving the side another world-class all-rounder. Sobers scored more than 8,000 Test runs at an impressive average of 57.78 and took 235 wickets in 93 matches.

Adam Gilchrist and Jasprit Bumrah make the cut

Former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist completed the top seven. Known for his aggressive approach with the bat, Gilchrist scored 5,570 Test runs at an average of 47.60 and a strike rate of nearly 82 across 96 matches. The bowling attack features a blend of pace and spin, with India’s Jasprit Bumrah the only active-era player selected. The 32-year-old has taken 234 wickets in 52 Tests at an average of under 20, including 16 five-wicket hauls.

Bumrah is joined by Pakistan pace legend Wasim Akram, who claimed 414 wickets at an average of 23.62 in 104 Tests. The spin department features two of the format’s greatest wicket-takers, Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan.

No place for Virat Kohli and Rahul Dravid in the special XI

The selection also means there is no place for former India captain Kohli or batting great Dravid. Kohli retired from Test cricket last year after scoring more than 9,000 runs and 30 centuries in 123 matches. Dravid, meanwhile, accumulated 13,288 Test runs and 36 centuries in 164 appearances, making him the fifth-highest run-scorer in Test history. Further, Ricky Ponting, Joe Root and James Anderson were named as the three reserves.
