Sydney Sweeney’s R-Rated Thriller Was So Good, It’s Already Getting A Sequel Next Year

Sydney Sweeney is one of the most exciting young stars working today, and her biggest hit from 2025 is already set to be followed up by a sequel next year. Throughout Sydney Sweeney’s best movies, the young actor has proven herself to be a strong dramatic force, and box office success has followed in response, prompting another chapter.

Granted, box office success for Sydney Sweeney has not been a sure thing. Before releasing the biggest film of her career, Sweeney starred in three back-to-back disappointments throughout 2025. Americana, Eden, and Christy all failed to garner a significant audience, which led many to reconsider Sweeney’s burgeoning star power. However, this turned out to be a bit misguided.

Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell had already proven their box office potential in 2023, with the release of Anyone But You. Following Sweeney’s excellent dramatic work on the hit series Euphoria and in films like Reality, this film only further made her draw clear.

However, the past year has also shown that the majority of audiences do not want to see Sweeney in every kind of movie. Rather, the films Sweeney appears in need to lean into her strengths.

While Christy was a strong effort, it tempered Sweeney’s visual appeal and typical characterization. She is a beautiful and charismatic young star with broad appeal, and it may take time before audiences want to see her in unusual roles. Fortunately, her upcoming sequel is set to capitalize on Sweeney’s talents.

The Housemaid Is One Of Sydney Sweeney’s Best Movies

2025’s The Housemaid was not just a big hit, but was also a very fun time at the movies. The twisty thriller featured a fantastic cast, including Sweeney, Brandon Sklenar, and Amanda Seyfried, and leaned into compelling mind games with both the characters and its audience.

Director Paul Feig, known for his work on films from A Simple Favor to Bridesmaids, injected the colorful film with the compelling texture of a 1990s erotic thriller. The Housemaid did not shy away from camp, and crafted a compelling and wildly entertaining story that went on to earn more than $400 million globally.

The film quickly became a career highlight for everyone involved, and audiences immediately clamored for a sequel. Fortunately, a follow-up is already in the works and will shoot later this year.

The Housemaid’s Secret will bring Sydney Sweeney back to the role of Millie Calloway on December 17, 2027. The sequel adapts Freida McFadden’s follow-up novel, which sees Millie taking another job that again goes off the rails in a number of newly unexpected ways.

Most excitingly, the sequel has already added some tremendous talent to its cast. Brittany Snow has been in some great movies and shows, and will join the sequel as Marybeth. Kirsten Dunst and Paul Anthony Kelly have also been added to the cast as Wendy and Douglas Garrick, respectively.

The novel was released in 2023, and was a huge success. The Housemaid novels have been a phenomenon, and it is no surprise that film adaptations have followed. Even more chapters could easily follow, with another novel and a short story filling out the series.

The Housemaid Could Easily Be A Trilogy

Following the novel of The Housemaid’s Secret, Freida McFadden has written additional follow-ups. She added a short story to the series, entitled “The Housemaid’s Wedding,” before finishing off the trilogy with The Housemaid is Watching.

There is certainly no reason why these stories could not be adapted as well, provided that The Housemaid’s Secret is also a success when it releases in 2027. While the third novel was not as well received as the first two installments, it does provide fitting closure to Millie’s story, and could make a great film .

It is exciting to see more adult thrillers on the big screen, and Sydney Sweeney is a great actor to star in them. Putting together a follow-up to The Handmaid so quickly is a very exciting move, and hopefully the result is a memorable film that will connect with audiences upon its release next year.
