England began their T20I series against Sri Lanka in emphatic fashion, securing a massive 119-run victory in the opening game at the Utilita Bowl. After Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first, England produced a batting masterclass, piling up 254/4 from their 20 overs before bowling out the visitors for just 135 with an over to spare.

The contest was dominated by England’s batting power, with Harry Brook producing his second T20I century and Jos Buttler returning to his devastating best. Brook’s unbeaten 114 came from just 42 deliveries, while Buttler struck 80 from 44 balls as the pair put on 128 runs for the third wicket.

Harry Brook and Jos Buttler put England in control

England got off to a flying start after Sri Lanka chose to bowl first. Debutant Aneurin Donald provided an immediate spark with 12 from five deliveries. Brook then turned the attack on Dunith Wellalage, smashing 30 from the fifth over as England’s scoring rate climbed rapidly. Buttler also got a reprieve when Eshan Malinga dropped him on 45 at long off, and the England pair made Sri Lanka pay for the missed opportunity.

Brook and Buttler combined for 128 from only 60 deliveries, with England reaching 90/1 in the powerplay. Buttler brought up his half-century from 29 balls before eventually falling for 80 off 44 deliveries. Brook continued his assault after Buttler’s dismissal and reached his century from 42 balls. The unbeaten 114 included 10 fours and seven sixes, taking England to a massive 254/4 at the end of their 20 overs.

Sonny Baker leads England’s bowling attack

Sri Lanka’s chase got off to a nightmare start as Sonny Baker bowled a maiden in the opening over. The Hampshire seamer then struck twice in his next few overs, dismissing Kamil Mishara and Lahiru Udara to put Sri Lanka under immediate pressure. Baker completed his impressive spell with the wicket of Maheesh Theekshana, ending with figures of 3/12. After struggling during his early international appearances, the 23-year-old produced his first limited-overs wickets at his home ground.

England’s bowling attack continued to dismantle the Sri Lankan batting order, with all six bowlers picking up at least one wicket. Wellalage provided some resistance with 33 off 21 balls at No. 8, but there was little support around him as Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 135. The result gave England a 1-0 lead in the series, while Brook finished the night with 114 not out and 350 total runs across his latest three white-ball centuries of the year.
