Hammers go top with emphatic fourth straight win

West Ham moved, at least temporarily, to the top of the Championship as they cruised to an emphatic 6-0 win over Wrexham.

The Hammers went into the game on the back of three straight victories, with that run helping Nuno Espirito Santo’s men put their early season struggles behind them as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League.

And, once Jarrod Bowen put West Ham in front in the 28th minute, there was never any doubt of them extending that streak to four games.

Captain Bowen deftly turned home at the near post from Morato’s low ball in from the left.

Nine minutes later it was 2-0 as Joel Piroe slammed into the roof of the net from Taty Castellanos’ lay-off after the Argentine beat the Wrexham offside trap.

Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home to make it 3-0 three minutes into the second half, and Castellanos then put the game beyond any doubt by finding the bottom-left corner at the end of a quick counter-attack.

Mohamadou Kante turned the game into a rout by brilliantly controlling Manor Solomon’s lofted pass and crashing home a fifth, and Solomon then rounded off West Ham’s best performance of the season as he fired in off the post from the edge of the area.

West Ham move a point clear of West Brom, who face QPR on Saturday, at the top. Wrexham, who narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season, have just one win from their opening seven games.
