Liverpool v Fulham Premier League preview

Liverpool and Fulham meet at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, with the Reds looking to claim their first Premier League home win of the season against a Cottagers side still searching for their opening point.

Andoni Iraola’s side beat Ipswich Town 2-0 in their last league outing, while Fulham suffered a third consecutive defeat when Crystal Palace edged them 3-2 at Craven Cottage.

The Reds have drawn each of their last three league matches at Anfield, having shared the points with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest after an opening-day draw against Bournemouth.

Liverpool have not endured a longer run without a home league win since the COVID-affected period, but they will be confident of ending that sequence against a Fulham side who have lost all three of their league matches this term.

Fulham did record their first competitive victory of the season by beating AFC Wimbledon 3-0 in the EFL Cup, but their league campaign has been far less encouraging.

The Cottagers lost 2-1 to Chelsea on the opening weekend before suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat away at Sunderland. They then conceded three goals at home to Crystal Palace in a 3-2 loss last weekend.

Fulham are expected to be without Luc De Fougerolles and Tom Cairney, who are both continuing their recoveries from knee injuries.

Manuel Angel, David Affengruber and Hugo Larsson were included in the matchday squad for the defeat to Crystal Palace, with Larsson making a brief second-half appearance.

Liverpool lost Bradley Barcola and Milos Kerkez before full time against Atletico Madrid, but Iraola confirmed that both players were suffering from cramp rather than serious injuries.

Cody Gakpo is a doubt after missing the Champions League victory with an adductor problem, while Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni, Hugo Ekitike, Joe Gomez and Federico Chiesa remain sidelined.

Liverpool’s attacking options could be tested by the fitness concerns surrounding Bradley Barcola and Cody Gakpo, but the Reds have enough quality to cause problems for a Fulham defence that has conceded six goals in three league matches.

The visitors have shown some promise going forward, particularly in the defeat to Crystal Palace, but their lack of points and defensive consistency make it difficult to back them against a Liverpool side growing in confidence.
