Brisbane Heat have bolstered their overseas options ahead of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season by signing experienced English all-rounder Tom Curran. The 31-year-old becomes the Heat’s first international recruit for the upcoming campaign and will bring considerable T20 experience to the squad.

Curran has previously featured in the BBL for both Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars, giving him a strong understanding of Australian conditions and venues. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him an appealing addition to Brisbane’s roster.

Tom Curran adds proven T20 experience to Brisbane Heat

Although Curran has not represented England for more than five years, he has remained a regular presence in franchise T20 cricket across the world. His experience of nearly 300 T20 matches has made him a dependable all-round option, particularly because of his ability to strike the ball aggressively while also delivering important overs.

Curran has scored at a remarkable career strike rate of 145.89 in the format and has collected 297 wickets. Those numbers underline the impact he has had as a genuine T20 cricketer over the years. The Englishman is currently involved in the inaugural ETPL 2026, while he also turned out for MI London in The Hundred. His recent performances have further demonstrated that he remains capable of making an impact with the ball.

Curran’s strong BBL record could benefit Heat

Curran already has considerable experience in the Big Bash, having played 52 matches in the competition. His familiarity with Australian pitches and playing conditions could prove particularly valuable to the Heat as they prepare for another campaign.
During his most recent BBL season with the Melbourne Stars, Curran produced the best bowling figures of his BBL career, claiming an impressive 4/10. Brisbane will hope that he can carry that form into his new stint with the franchise.

His experience also means Curran should require little time to adjust to the demands of the competition. Having previously played for two established BBL teams, he understands the pace, conditions and tactical challenges involved in Australian T20 cricket.

James Hopes backs Curran to make an impact

Brisbane Heat coach James Hopes is confident that Curran can bring more than just his statistics to the team. Having previously coached him during their time together at Delhi in the IPL, Hopes highlighted the all-rounder’s competitive nature and leadership qualities.

“He’s fiercely competitive and from my experience coaching him at Delhi in the IPL, he lifts the other players around him through his energy, drive and focus,” Hopes said.

Hopes also revealed that he had been following Curran’s recent performances in the new Euro League, where the Englishman had taken 10 wickets in four games. Hopes believes Curran’s batting could be equally important for Brisbane. He compared his role to that of Michael Neser, particularly in the way he can manage an innings and adapt to the situation.

“Batting wise, he is very similar to Michael Neser in the way he can influence a game by managing the innings, either counter-attacking himself or getting the best out of his partner,” Hopes added.

With experience, versatility and familiarity with Australian conditions, Curran could emerge as an important piece of Brisbane Heat’s BBL 2026-27 campaign.
