Orange is one of those rare colors that lives equally in summer and fall. In its brighter shades, it has the punchiness summer calls for, but as the saturation deepens and crisps up, it carries all the way through the end of the year. It’s the difference between a punchy citrus hue that wants sandals and something closer to persimmon, which looks best next to suede or a little animal print.

October wants to claim the color entirely, and the worry is that you’ll end up looking like a pumpkin. You won’t, as long as you keep it reading more fashion than gourd. Lace on a satin camisole does it, so does adding a corded belt in a pop of red, or layering a few different intensities of orange together instead of committing to one flat shade. Any of those keep it from getting too on the nose.
