Wasim Jaffer questions Sanju Samson as backup opener

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer does not believe Sanju Samson should be considered a backup opening option for India ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. While acknowledging Samson’s ability with the bat, Jaffer pointed towards consistency as a major concern in the 50-over format.

Speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, Jaffer explained that ODI cricket demands a different level of reliability compared to T20 cricket because batters have more time to build an innings.

“I do not see Sanju Samson as a backup opener for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027; I think there is a slight issue of consistency with him. In one-day cricket, you require a bit more consistency because there is more time at the crease,” Jaffer said.

Samson has shown that he possesses the quality to produce match-winning performances in ODIs. His most recent ODI appearance also resulted in a century, underlining his ability to make a significant impact when he gets going.

However, Jaffer believes one standout performance should not overshadow the larger picture. The former opener pointed out that Samson has already played a considerable amount of ODI cricket but has struggled to maintain consistency across opportunities.

“I think India has a few better options than Sanju Samson. I feel Sanju should be left alone to play T20 cricket,” Jaffer added.

Jaffer’s comments highlight the intense competition for batting positions in the Indian setup. With several talented players capable of opening or adapting to different roles, the selectors have plenty to consider before finalising their World Cup plans.

Expectations high from Team India

Expectations will be high from Team India for the mega event. Under Shubman Gill, India will be looking to claim the coveted trophy and end their long wait for another ODI World Cup triumph. India came agonisingly close in the previous edition on home soil. The Men in Blue enjoyed an outstanding run through the 2023 ODI World Cup, winning their matches throughout the league stage and continuing their momentum into the knockout rounds. However, their campaign ended in disappointment after they suffered defeat against Australia in the final.

The 2027 edition will therefore provide India with another opportunity to go all the way. With Gill expected to lead the side, building a dependable squad with depth in every department will be crucial. For now, the debate surrounding backup options such as Samson is likely to continue. As the tournament approaches, consistency, recent form and adaptability will all play a major role in determining who earns a place in India’s World Cup plans.
