Netflix‘s newest most-viewed movie in the platform’s charts has set an unusual record for the streaming service that is likely to not be replicated for quite some time. While Netflix is best known for its wide array of movie and show offerings, the platform has dipped its toes into diversifying its platform in other ways too, be that via Netflix releasing documentaries, being a platform where you can play video games, or through interactive releases like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which all pushed the boat out in different ways.
It’s been consistently interesting to see how these novel efforts have been received by Netflix’s user base, as while there are those who will only ever want to use the platform to watch Netflix’s original movies and shows or go through old classics, there is also a notable portion of the streaming service’s audience that seem to be interested in any unusual efforts that go against the grain of convention.
This has been displayed in major form via some of Netflix’s latest official statistics, and what they mean for the platform overall when it comes to both its movie roster, and its efforts to provide some things that are a little bit different to its audience.
Netflix’s New Weekly Most-Viewed Movie Is Outwatched By A Unique Event For The Platform
While The Whisper Man is the most-viewed movie of the most recently officially recorded period of Netflix’s history (August 24-August 30), it is notable that the most-viewed movie globally in this time period on Netflix is actually recorded as the platform’s second most-seen release within the film category.
Instead, the number one spot for this week is instead taken by the exclusive extended early look at GTA 6 that released on Netflix to much acclaim, and which garnered 31,100,000 views, earning it this record on the platform. With Netflix’s own site putting Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look in this place, it’s clear the release is being considered as loosely within this category, which makes sense given it falls into the same rough category as Netflix’s other assorted specials.
GTA 6’s Netflix View Record Is Even More Impressive Given The Movies It Was Viewed More Than
Of course, GTA 6 has long been one of the most eagerly awaited impending releases in the world of video games ever since GTA 5 itself came out all the way back in 2013, and the over a decade wait for the sequel has only stoked the flames of hype higher and higher for the first proper look at the newest installment and what to expect from its story and gameplay.
With that said, seeing which movies the GTA 6 extended look got more views than on Netflix helps to further put its popularity and the excitement for it in context. For example, the special obtained around 8,000,000 views more than Robert De Niro’s The Whisper Man itself in this time period, putting some considerable distance between it and the most-watched movie on Netflix during this week, even if The Whisper Man had a higher watchtime in terms of hours as a result of it being far longer in runtime.
That said, the GTA 6 exclusive look also had considerably more watchtime than every movie on the Netflix leaderboard during this time period other than The Whisper Man, which puts things in perspective too, given the GTA preview came in at 27 minutes long, and the movies all come in at at least an hour and a half – meaning the preview needed to make over three times the amount of views to match and beat all these film watchtimes, making its success all the more striking.
