Major Spoilers ahead for Silo season 3, episode 9.Silo season 3’s episode 9 is one of the most gripping installments of the entire series. In its present timeline, Tim Robbins’ Bernard makes the ultimate sacrifice to redeem himself and help save the people of Silo 18. Meanwhile, in the past, things take a grim turn for Helen and Daniel as they realize the truth about the Silo Project.
After walking through Bernard’s bittersweet death, Silo season 3‘s episode 9 shifts back to the past timeline. During the closing sequence, Daniel and Helen attend the unveiling of the Silo Project. Everything seems fine until Daniel realizes something is not right. When he messages Charlotte, even her response seems a little too strange.
Suspecting that something is wrong, Daniel stands at Silo 1’s outer berm and asks Helen to do the same outside Silo 18 to get cell reception. Moments later, Georgia seemingly gets nuked, and Helen and Daniel observe a massive mushroom cloud on the horizon. Before the credits start rolling, Daniel is forced into Silo 1 while Helen is taken to Silo 18.
Who Bombed Georgia, USA In Silo Season 3, Episode 9 Ending
Considering how an apocalyptic event was supposed to end the world in Silo‘s past timeline, the nuclear bombing at the end of episode 9 seemingly marked the end of the world. It was previously established that Iran and the US were at war. Owing to this, one would logically assume that Iran ultimately nuked the US.
However, a lot of aspects of this theory do not line up. Stensen previously revealed that a dangerous nanotechnology development race was on between the US and Iran. Why would Iran suddenly decide to go all nuclear and trigger the end of the world over a conflict it was trying to win through completely different means?
Daniel and Helen were clueless about what was going to happen. However, characters like Henry, Stensen, and even Anna were not acting normally even before the nuclear bombing. Even when Daniel tried to walk away and call Charlotte and Helen, Henry tried to bring him back to Silo 1. Helen’s tour guide, too, kept asking her to return to Silo 18 for breakfast when she walked out.
Not to mention, the tour guide even says that “the silo was built to withstand a 30-megaton nuclear explosion as close as two miles.” These details suggest that many people were anticipating a nuclear attack. Did they know exactly when Iran would trigger the world-ending attack? Or was the world-ending event a carefully orchestrated inside job planned by the US to end the nanotech race for good?
Why Helen & Daniel Were Assigned Different Silos
Daniel has always been an asset to those who created the Silo project. Both as a politician and a brilliant former Engineer, he has played a crucial role in ensuring the silos were constructed on time. Owing to this, Stensen and Thurman probably wanted him in Silo 1 with them. As Bernard also figured in Silo season 3, all the other silos are secretly being controlled by someone in Silo 1.
In episode 9, he even suspects that the person behind The Algorithm lives in Silo 1 and is pretending to be an omniscient “machine” to deceive them. This establishes that Silo 1 serves more like a command center for all the silos where the powerful founders make decisions to manipulate and control other silos.
Helen was not sent to Silo 1 because she has always been a liability. As a journalist, she always questioned things and even prompted Daniel to doubt Stensen and Thurman’s motives. Having her in Silo 1 would be a risk, explaining why she was forced into Silo 18. Isolating Daniel and making him believe that his defiance could even put Helen in harm’s way must have been another strategy to keep him compliant.
What Happened To Charlotte In Silo Season 3, Episode 9?
Charlotte disappears long before Daniel realizes something is wrong. To check whether he is texting her, Daniel messages her an inside family joke: “If mom and dad were alive right now…” The response to the joke helps him realize that someone else has Charlotte’s phone. While the episode does not reveal Charlotte’s fate, she was likely sent to Silo 1 long before Daniel.
Stensen had previously asked her to join the Silo Project as a drone pilot. Since she, too, was an asset, they must have taken her to Silo 1 before the nuclear attack.
Daniel & Helen’s Separation Reveals 1 Harsh Truth About The Silo Project
Helen and Daniel’s separation in Silo season 3’s episode 9 reveals that the silos were never meant to be fair. As Helen had suspected, people like Stensen and Thurman never had their best interests in mind. They probably would not have even cared about Helen if she weren’t romantically involved with Daniel.
This makes it hard not to wonder whether the silos were truly built to save the world. Many characters, including Helen, Juliette, and Bernard, have questioned that, if the purpose of the silos was to merely repopulate the world after a global disaster, why were Safeguards built to destroy them in one go? Silo season 3’s finale and upcoming season 4 will provide more answers and unpack these mysteries.
