Sunil Narine has added another extraordinary chapter to his decorated T20 career, becoming only the second bowler in the history of the format to claim 650 wickets. The West Indies mystery spinner reached the landmark while representing Trinbago Knight Riders against Saint Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba.
Narine’s achievement is particularly impressive given the demands of modern T20 cricket, where bowlers are routinely challenged by aggressive batters and inventive strokeplay. Despite those pressures, the veteran spinner has remained one of the most difficult bowlers to score against for well over a decade.
John Campbell becomes historic 650th victim
The landmark wicket arrived during the 12th over of Saint Lucia Kings’ innings. Narine produced another delivery that left opening batter John Campbell struggling to find a response, trapping him in front of the stumps.
The lbw dismissal sparked celebrations from Narine’s teammates and supporters as the significance of the moment became clear. With Campbell’s wicket, the Trinidadian reached 650 T20 wickets, joining Afghanistan superstar Rashid Khan in an exclusive club.
Rashid remains the only other bowler to have crossed the 650-wicket barrier, highlighting just how extraordinary Narine’s consistency has been across different leagues and competitions around the world.
Ahead of Dwayne Bravo in the wicket charts
Narine’s latest feat also places him ahead of another legendary West Indies T20 campaigner, Dwayne Bravo. Bravo finished his career with 631 wickets, having enjoyed tremendous success in franchise cricket as both a bowler and an all-rounder.
Narine’s journey, however, has been built around a different kind of bowling. His variations, accuracy and ability to disguise his deliveries have repeatedly made him a nightmare for batters, particularly during the middle overs.
His numbers underline that effectiveness. Across his vast T20 career, Narine has maintained an economy rate of around 6.15 runs per over, an exceptional figure in a format where run-scoring has continually accelerated.
A dominant force in the CPL and IPL
Narine’s influence is especially evident in the competitions where he has spent much of his career. He remains the leading wicket-taker in CPL history, with his tally having reached 137 wickets.
His association with Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League has been equally significant. Narine has spent his entire IPL career with KKR and has crossed the 200-wicket mark for the franchise, becoming the first overseas bowler to reach that figure for a single IPL team.
Beyond his bowling, Narine has also reinvented himself as a destructive top-order option. His ability to contribute with the bat has added another layer to his value and helped him remain relevant through several generations of T20 cricket.
When Narine emerged on the global stage in the early 2010s, many wondered how long his unusual action and variations could remain effective. Batters eventually had more footage to study, while T20 cricket itself evolved rapidly. Yet Narine kept adapting.
From the CPL and IPL to tournaments around the world, the spinner has continued to find ways to frustrate batters. Reaching 650 wickets is therefore more than a statistical landmark. It is a reflection of remarkable longevity, adaptability and consistency in one of cricket’s most demanding formats.
