Sonal Dinusha produced one of Sri Lanka’s most memorable performances of the second Test against India, turning his overnight score of 85 into a magnificent century on Day 4 at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. With Sri Lanka under enormous pressure after India’s 503/9 declaration, Dinusha continued to fight with the lower order and gave the home side something to celebrate despite the team’s difficult position.

Dinusha had already frustrated India throughout the final session on Day 3, remaining unbeaten on 85 when rain brought an early end to play. Returning to the crease on Wednesday, the Sri Lankan all-rounder showed the same determination and completed his century from 162 deliveries.

Sonal Dinusha completes memorable century in Colombo

Sri Lanka resumed Day 4 at 265/8, still trailing India by 238 runs. The hosts needed another 39 runs to avoid the follow-on, while Dinusha carried the responsibility of guiding the tail towards that target. The left-hander eventually reached three figures with another composed display under pressure. His 103 came from 162 deliveries and included seven boundaries and two sixes, making him the standout performer in Sri Lanka’s first innings.

Dinusha’s century also placed him in an exclusive group, as he became only the eighth batter in cricket history to score centuries in his first two Tests against India. However, his effort could not prevent Sri Lanka from falling well short of India’s total.

Saransh Jain wraps up Sri Lanka’s innings

India’s debutant spinner Saransh Jain played a key role in finishing the innings. He first dismissed Lahiru Kumara for 12 before trapping Dinusha LBW to claim his maiden international wicket and end Sri Lanka’s resistance. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 290, giving India a first-innings lead of 213 runs. With the hosts falling short of the follow-on target, Shubman Gill immediately enforced the follow-on.

Sri Lanka began their second innings with just 3/0 after 1.4 overs, with Lahiru Udara unbeaten on 3 and Kamil Mishara yet to score. India therefore remain in a commanding position, with the hosts still 210 runs behind. Dinusha’s century may not have changed the balance of the match, but his remarkable resistance gave Sri Lankan fans a reason to celebrate.
