My eye almost always goes to color first, so tonal dressing only works for me when there’s an element of texture in the mix. The most compelling versions stay within one close register, but texture and proportion introduce enough dimension that the look never feels flat. Neutrals like camel, taupe, and cocoa transform depending on the surface: softened in lace, richer in suede, sharper by way of a cropped silhouette. An outfit made entirely of neutrals feels incredibly luxurious when every piece brings a new touch or feel.

That’s where fall starts doing the work for you. A suede bag, a fringed scarf, a shearling-trimmed knit, a deeper brown shoe, each one adds weight that the color alone can’t. It’s still easy to wear now with lighter layers and bare legs, and it only gets better as the textures start entering the mix. By October, the palette hasn’t changed at all.
