Amazon Prime Video’s mysterious science fiction series Outer Range merely posed more mind-bending questions in its second season, but it has been unceremoniously canceled. Debuting in 2022, the show concerned a ranching family named the Abbotts who were reeling from the disappearance of a member of their clan while fighting off neighboring ranchers who want to grab their land.
Meanwhile, the plot thickened as a strange black void opened on the property and plunged their lives into strange and uncanny territory. Helmed by a masterful performance by Josh Brolin as family patriarch Royal Abbott, Prime Video’s Outer Range was yet another mystery-based thriller that thrived by throwing a multitude of curveballs at the audience each episode.
Though Outer Range has been pitched as Lost meets Yellowstone, its genre-bending work set the story apart from both typical Western and sci-fi fare. While reviews of season 2 were somewhat middling, the more-questions-than-answers ending made a third season of Outer Range an absolute necessity. Unfortunately, one won’t be coming.
Prime Video Canceled Outer Range After Season 2
Fans didn’t have to wait too long to learn the fate of their favorite burgeoning sci-fi hit, but the answer is unfortunately grim. Outer Range was canceled by Prime Video less than two months after its sophomore season debuted on the platform, leaving many of the show’s most interesting storylines unresolved, as is always the risk when it comes to the mystery box format made famous by shows like Lost.
Prime hasn’t given a reason for the decision. In lieu of an official explanation, it’s safe to assume that high production costs and low viewership likely tanked the series.
Outer Range season 2 premiered all seven episodes on May 16, 2024.
What Outer Range’s Season 3 Story Could Have Been About
Season 2 Left Questions That Will Never Be Answered
Unsurprisingly, the biggest questions of Outer Range season 2 were answered, but the answers merely posed more confusing questions. The revelation that Autumn (Imogen Poots) is, in fact, Amy (Olive Abercrombie) in the future was further clarified when the former shoved the latter into the black hole, and she awoke with amnesia, referring to herself as Autumn.
This caused the portal to close, which would have offered some interesting challenges in season 3. With Autumn essentially fulfilling herself, the timeline would only get muddier. Also speaking of Autumn, the persistent visions of the elder version of Amy leading the time cult were peppered throughout season 2, and season 3 would likely have started her down that path.
Though the black hole is closed, its origins and exact nature remain unexplained, and it likely has something to do with Autumn’s future as the leader of the cult.
Beyond Autumn, Outer Range season 2 really leaned into its time travel premise, introducing several different stories that unfolded across time. While Sheriff Joy spent years in the 1880s, Perry met younger iterations of his parents. Things then got trippier than they had ever been when Perry returned just shy of the present, saw himself get killed, and took his own place.
This completely changed the events that opened the show, bringing yet another dimension to Outer Range‘s sci-fi. Season 2 didn’t get a chance to address the implications of its final moments, in which characters not only traveled through time, but changed the events of the past. Season 3 would almost certainly have engaged with this new idea that hinted at the existence of alternate timelines.
What Outer Range’s Cast And Creators Have Said About The Show’s Cancellation
Outer Range creator Brian Watkins had actually already departed the series between seasons 1 and 2, with star and executive producer Josh Brolin indicating that Watkins, a playwright who made his first foray into screenwriting and producing with Outer Range, was “given a responsibility that was irresponsible given his experience” (Vanity Fair).
Producer Charles Murray then took over as showrunner in season 2, and was highly praised in Brolin’s sentimental Instagram post following Outer Range’s cancellation:
As much of a faux pas as I feel that it is for Amazon Prime to cancel our beloved show Outer Range, it will never minimize or detract from how great this idea, this diamond cast, and the hardest working crew I’ve ever encountered have been. As for creative integrity: 2-0. We win. Thank you Charles Murray especially for being willing to build upon the wave machine that was so faultily granted you. Kudos. And thank you most of all to the uber-loyal fans. Along with No Country For Old Men and Sicario, Outer Range is a title among kings I am approached with most. We appreciate you right back. See you…elsewhere.
The showrunner shake-up does explain the distinctly different feel of Outer Range season 2, something that didn’t go unnoticed by viewers and may have contributed to the show’s cancellation. Nonetheless, it’s clear that Outer Range was a labor of love, and the show has ended with much of its story still untold.
