WATCH: Yashasvi Jaiswal indulges in physical altercation with Asitha Fernando on Day 1 of Colombo Test – SL vs IND

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando were involved in a heated confrontation during the opening session of the second Test between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo on Sunday. The incident occurred immediately after the Sri Lankan pacer dismissed the India opener, with both players exchanging words before the situation was brought under control by the Sri Lankan captain.

Asitha Fernando breaks through Yashasvi Jaiswal’s defence

Jaiswal had looked comfortable at the crease and was beginning to settle into his innings when Fernando produced the breakthrough in the 17th over. The India batter had scored 45 runs and appeared well placed to build a substantial contribution for the visitors. Fernando’s dismissal triggered an animated celebration from the Sri Lankan quick. The pacer appeared to direct a few words towards Jaiswal while celebrating, prompting a reaction from the India opener.

Jaiswal initially seemed ready to walk away without escalating the situation. However, he soon turned back and approached Fernando, setting up an unexpected confrontation in the middle.

Players come face-to-face

The exchange quickly became tense as Jaiswal and Fernando stood close to each other and continued trading words. The confrontation appeared to edge towards physical contact before the situation could become more serious. Players from both sides were nearby, but it was the Sri Lankan captain who stepped in and helped separate the two cricketers. The intervention prevented the argument from escalating further, allowing play to eventually continue.

While verbal exchanges and animated celebrations are not uncommon in Test cricket, the incident added an extra layer of intensity to an already competitive opening session in Colombo. Jaiswal’s dismissal also came at a crucial stage for India, as the left-handed opener had spent considerable time at the crease before Fernando finally found a way past him.

Incident adds spice to Colombo Test

The confrontation between Jaiswal and Fernando quickly became one of the talking points from the first day, particularly because of how closely the two players came to each other during the exchange. Jaiswal has developed a reputation for playing with plenty of aggression and emotion, while Fernando is also known for his competitive approach with the ball. Their clash provided a glimpse of the intensity surrounding the Test, although neither side appeared interested in allowing the incident to overshadow the cricket for long.

The focus will now shift back to the contest itself, with both teams looking to gain an advantage in the second Test. For Jaiswal, the dismissal will be particularly frustrating after he had worked himself into a promising position. The incident also underlined how quickly emotions can boil over in Test cricket, where battles between bat and ball can sometimes spill into heated exchanges between players.
