Red Dead Redemption 2 Gets New Fan-Made Van Horn Expansion

It’s really easy to get the itch to go back to Red Dead Redemption 2. In pretty much any open-world game, I’m also flashing back to the first time I played it, and how rich the map is. While it wasn’t perfect, the idea of saddling up and going out on dynamic adventures was a blast, to the point where it was easy to spend hours gallivanting around without touching the main story.

You’ll want to do that with the Van Horn expansion, too, which just dropped for Red Dead Redemption 2. It’s an excellent excuse to return to this modern classic, and adds things most people wouldn’t even think of.

Developed by a team of modders (1Vex16, Kristiand3, Snarra2256, Johnnyboy684, Rixus), as well as using framework from the PNA Team, you can now download the Van Horn expansion from Nexus Mods.

This is an absolute monster of an expansion, which aims to really make Van Horn a thriving part of the Red Dead Redemption 2 map. Billed as a “forgotten town,” Van Horn now has a port, where the two broken docks have been repaired, and ships, boathouses, dockworkers, usable boats, fishermen, and market stalls adorn the landscape.

There’s also a ship graveyard from the expansion, with sunken ships and abandoned cargo to sift through. The Van Horn church has been constructed, as well as a train station, which hosts more NPCs, and the boarded-up windows have been removed to make it more inviting. If you’re so inclined, you can check out the fully restored 1899 lighthouse bridge, and the horse poop has been cleaned up.

Van Horn’s main strip has been revamped completely to make it more in line with the other towns, and new businesses are also in:

  • Wagon Fence
  • Merchant (on the docks)
  • Boat Fence

Amazingly, it also has compatibility with the Dynamic World mod, one of the more famous mods in the Red Dead Redemption 2 community, which is self-described as “essentially a bunch of smaller mod ideas combined into one, to make the world feel more lively, dynamic, and interesting to explore.”

It adds mission-exclusive events, more story locations, the ability to explore all locked locations, more NPCs overall, custom train configurations, time-based map changes, and more.

The only requirement is that you pick up Project New Austin’s !PNA.ASI mod, which allows more NPCs. For reference, 1.0 is out now, and the mod will get “periodic updates,” with anything from more content, bug fixes, and “possibly” expanding features and mechanics.

So far, fans are already loving it, like this one Nexus Mods user: “I need to say it’s your best Mod you published yet… this mod makes RDR2 much more immersive than mods like PNA; really, it makes the city just fun to be in. Please make more mods; maybe Saint Denis could see some refresh. Would be great too.”

Red Dead Redemption 2 could have used more official support, but the community has picked up the torch. If you’ve been putting off going back into Red Dead Redemption 2 for a while, this could be your excuse.
