Although we’re still a few months away, Dune: Part Three has already shown us a major moment to rival one of The Odyssey’s coolest scenes. Adapting Dune: Messiah and expanding the events of the novel to an even greater degree, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three is set to be one of the most ambitious sci-fi trilogy enders of all time. As such, I’m pretty excited about one new character in particular.

As seen in one of the latest trailers for Dune: Part Three, footage is shown of what looks to be the holy war unleashed at the end of Dune: Part Two in the name of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Muad’Dib Atreides. As such, there’s one shot that’s absolutely awesome (while also mirroring one of the best moments from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey).

While there’s already a fun canonical connection between the world of Dune and the legacy original poem written by Homer 3,000 years ago, it’s pretty cool to see what looks like a truly epic moment to rival one of The Odyssey’s own when Dune: Part Three hits theaters at the end of the year.

Dune 3’s Latest Teaser Rivals The Odyssey’s Agamemnon Moment

One of the coolest moments in The Odyssey is shown during Menelaus’ account of the Trojan Horse and how the Greek warriors managed to open the gates and take the city of Troy. Opening the massive gates just in time, Benny Safdie’s King Agamemnon appears to be the only man on the other side, clad in his impressive black and gold armor before legions of warriors emerge from the shadows to sack the city. It’s pure aura-farming, showcasing both Agamemnon’s authority (but also his extreme pride).

Now, it seems Dune: Part Three has its own sequence to rival Agamemnon’s in The Odyssey.

One of the latest trailers for Dune: Part Three features a lone warrior clad in futuristic armor clearly inspired by samurai. Opposing this mysterious unknown warrior is Stilgar and the numerous forces of the Fremen, no doubt preparing to claim this world in Paul’s name. Interestingly, an upcoming expansion inspired by Part Three for the popular Dune: Imperium board game suggests that this new samurai warrior will be named “Count Gorlu of House Synoche”, hailing from the planet Enfeil. As such, it seems as though this new character will be one of the first enemies the Fremen faced during their holy war.

Debuting as a lone warrior with impressive armor of his own, it’s not hard to make a comparison to Agamemnon’s entrance in The Odyssey.

Dune Has Another Agamemnon Connection

Within the mythology of Dune, it’s worth noting that Paul Atreides and his house are descendants of Agamemnon himself. Likewise, the ancestry becomes quite significant in the Children of Dune novel, with Paul’s sister Alia being able to access the genetic memories and voices of their ancestors using her “Other Memory.” This includes Agamemnon, who at one point demanded that his voice be heard.

That being said, audiences probably shouldn’t expect to see a second Agamemnon appearance in Dune: Part Three, seeing how the upcoming movie is adapting the preceding novel Dune: Messiah. Even so, the fact that 2026 is set to feature both a movie starring Agamemnon and a second movie starring one of his descendants millennia later is still pretty cool and a fun coincidence.

Can Dune 3 Beat The Odyssey?

Naturally, Dune: Part Three and The Odyssey are two of the biggest cinematic events this year, coming from two of the most accomplished and popular auteur directors. As such, both will absolutely be competing for attention during awards season.

Currently, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has proven its appeal to a wide audience, and its box office records speak for themselves. Given the competition with Avengers: Doomsday releasing on the same day, it does seem more likely that while Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three might not reach the same box office heights as The Odyssey, it could very well win some long-overdue awards.

Dune: Part Three releases in theaters on December 18th, 2026.
