India began their two-match Test series against Sri Lanka on a winning note after completing a 165-run victory in Galle on Wednesday, August 19. The result gave the visitors an early advantage in the series after a contest that demanded plenty of patience from both teams.
While the players remained in the spotlight throughout the five-day Test, there was also significant work taking place away from the centre. The difficult conditions at the venue required the ground staff to remain alert throughout the contest, particularly whenever rain interrupted proceedings. Their efforts eventually helped the match reach a decisive result.
Rishabh Pant praises Galle groundsmen after India’s victory
Following India’s impressive victory, Rishabh Pant took to Instagram to acknowledge the contribution of the groundsmen and support staff at the Galle International Stadium. The wicketkeeper-batter specifically praised their efforts in dealing with the persistent rain throughout the Test.
“Thank you to the groundsmen and support staff. The effort and support from you were unbelievable, especially with the rain. Really appreciate it,” Pant wrote on his Instagram story alongside a picture of the ground staff working on the field.
The Galle Test was repeatedly affected by weather interruptions. The start of Day 2 was delayed by heavy rain and a wet outfield, while play on the penultimate day was also brought to an early end as dark clouds gathered over the venue. The ground staff repeatedly worked with the covers and mopped up damp areas whenever the weather cleared, helping the players return to the field as quickly as possible.

Manav Suthar stars as India take 1-0 series lead
India eventually completed a comfortable victory after bowling Sri Lanka out for 206 while defending a target of 372. Manav Suthar was the standout performer, claiming a maiden 10-wicket haul in Test cricket and leading India’s bowling attack throughout the contest.
Sri Lanka showed resistance through Sonal Dinusha and captain Dhananjaya de Silva, who put together a 95-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Dinusha scored 84, while de Silva contributed 59, but India continued to apply pressure and eventually dismissed the hosts.
The victory moved India to a 53.33% points percentage in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings. They are currently fifth after 10 matches, with five wins, four defeats and one draw. The second and final Test of the series will be played at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23.
