Is Obi-Wan Kenobi making a big Star Wars comeback?

Ewan McGregor has revealed his interest in returning as the Jedi Master for a future Star Wars project, explaining what he pitched to Dave Filoni. McGregor portrayed Obi-Wan in live-action across the prequel trilogy of films, while he later returned to his role for Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi TV show. The actor has yet to return as the character since the series closed out in 2022, depsite having a vital role in the franchise both during the Clone Wars and at the start of Luke Skywalker’s character arc. But just because he hasn’t returned yet, doesn’t mean he’s gone for good.

Speaking with Variety at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, McGregor unpacked a number of ideas he pitched to Filoni for Obi-Wan’s potential return in a future Star Wars project. He explained that he told the LucasFilm president and CCO he wants to come back to the franchise, pitching the idea that Obi-Wan could be seeking out Yoda between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. He even held out hope for a love story between Obi-Wan and Hera Syndulla, played by McGregor’s real-life wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

It was very casual, but I said there’s got to be something. Because Yoda’s somewhere else. After the end of ‘Episode III’, when we all go to the four or five corners of the galaxy — or however many corners it’s got! — I won’t have been in touch with him. But he’s out there. So I think there could be a story there where I’m trying to reach out to him.
