Godzilla’s Official Crossover With a 2,700-Year Old Classic is an S-Tier Masterpiece

Godzilla may have just gotten his most epic crossover of all time, as the King of Monsters’ story collides with a 2,700-year-old classic to create something that is nothing short of an S-Tier masterpiece.

If you’re a Godzilla fan and haven’t heard of IDW Publishing’s anthology comic miniseries Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents, then you need to drop everything and dive straight in, especially if you love seeing the iconic kaiju step outside his own universe and into other IPs to create epic crossovers with famous works of classic literature, such as Romeo & Juliet, War of the Worlds, as well as an upcoming crossover with The Wizard of Oz.

Among the kaiju’s various crossovers, writer Frank Tieri and artist Ilias Kyriazis’s Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Godzilla’s The Odyssey #1 stands out. As the title suggests, this 48-page masterpiece, which officially released on June 10, 2026, sees the King of Monsters clash with Homer’s The Odyssey.

Given that Homer’s The Odyssey is roughly 2,700–2,800 years old, this ancient Greek epic truly is a classic, widely regarded as one of the most famous and enduring works of literature ever written. Christopher Nolan’s recent adaptation of The Odyssey into a blockbuster film speaks to the enduring legacy of this classic. And now, fans can experience The Odyssey reimagined like never before, all thanks to a certain legendary kaiju.

Godzilla’s Monsterpiece Theatre Presents: Godzilla’s The Odyssey #1 is essentially a fast-paced retelling of The Odyssey, with the twist that Godzilla, alongside other notable Toho kaiju, shows up and replace iconic characters from the classic tale. Without getting into specifics to avoid spoilers, Godzilla’s role in the story and its relation to Greek mythology were highlights of the tale and will be standouts for readers who love Greek mythology. Those interested in the one-shot can find its official synopsis below:

Godzilla’s tour of the literary canon continues as it smashes its way across The Odyssey in this oversize standalone one-shot!

Homer’s The Odyssey is widely considered to be the greatest epic of all time. So, how could you possibly make it more epic? Fill it with kaiju; that’s how. Odysseus’ journey home was already challenging enough, but what if instead of storms, sirens, and cyclopes, the gods sent monsters even more powerful than the titans? And what if Zeus sent the most powerful one of all to assist the king on his odyssey? It’s like Homer said: “Of all creatures that breathe and move upon the earth, nothing is bred that is stronger than Godzilla.

While readers who are familiar with The Odyssey will find Godzilla’s The Odyssey particularly fun, as they’ll be able to truly appreciate the mashing of the two IPs and all the brilliant parallels, this comic is also perfect for those new to The Odyssey, as it gives them a super-condensed crash course on this 2,700-year-old classic. One thing that really stands out about the comic is how seamlessly the mythology of The Odyssey and Godzilla blend together to create an S-Tier masterpiece.

Truly, the only thing that could have improved Godzilla’s The Odyssey #1 was if IDW Publishing had given it a miniseries rather than a single issue. With The Odyssey being an epic rich in iconic mythology, there was truly more than enough source material for this Godzilla mashup to be expanded into a longer tale. Since the comic received such a strong reader reception, here’s to hoping we will get more Godzilla x The Odyssey in the future.
