‘This is probably my last year of football’ – Ronaldo makes another retirement hint

Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that this season will “probably” be his last in football.

Ronaldo has dropped a few retirement hints in recent years, but his latest comments seem to be his clearest yet regarding the end of his career.

The 41-year-old is expected to retire from Portugal duty during the next international break, following a disappointing World Cup campaign in which they were knocked out in the round of 16 by eventual champions Spain.

Ronaldo had already announced it would be his final World Cup, though he stated after that match that he would not make any “rash decisions” about his international future.

He has enjoyed a glittering career with both club and country, but he is already starting to turn his focus away from the football pitch.

“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” he told Vogue.

“I have my future all mapped out. I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard.

“Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.

“And also have more fun, travel more, watch and play Padel, which I really like, and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned. Because, after all, it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.”

Ronaldo’s current contract at Al-Nassr is due to run out in June 2027, meaning he is likely to see out his deal before hanging up his boots.

He became the first player to score in six World Cups this year and is the leading scorer in men’s international football, with 146 goals.

Ronaldo is also closing in on the incredible landmark of 1,000 career goals, having netted 976 official goals in 1,330 appearances, as he prepares to play his 25th season.

He has also racked up 35 major honours for club and country in that time, while also winning the Ballon d’Or on five occasions – twice lifting it in two consecutive years.
