In only one month’s time, Prime Video’s biggest action franchise will expand to include its first spinoff series. From Apple TV’s gritty espionage series Slow Horses to Netflix’s The Night Agent, every major streaming service is vying to create the most popular action thriller on the small screen right now. Thanks to shows like Tracker, even traditional networks like CBS have gotten in on the action.

However, despite their best efforts, all of these shows fall short of dethroning the genre’s hulking, critically acclaimed current crown prince. Based on the ongoing book series of the same name by author Lee Child, Prime Video’s biggest action thriller was already renewed for a fifth season before its fourth outing even arrived, and the show’s blend of mainstream popularity and critical success saw it spawn a spinoff that is soon set to debut on the streaming service.

The show is Prime Video’s Alan Ritchson vehicle Reacher, the action thriller whose fourth season recently debuted to typically superb critical write-ups. With a critical score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 94% on the same site, it is obvious that viewers and reviewers are still big fans of Ritchson’s brooding drifter antihero. This is good news for Prime Video, since next month will finally see the arrival of the show’s first spinoff, Neagley.

Neagley Season 1 Arrives On Prime Video September 16

Reacher isn’t the first screen adaptation of Child’s massively popular novel series, which began in 1997 with the book Killing Floor. However, Prime Video’s series is more popular with critics and audiences than Tom Cruise’s two earlier Jack Reacher movies from the 2010s, thanks in no small part to its TV-MA rating. This more mature rating means Prime Video’s version of Reacher can be truer to the surprisingly brutal source material.

Each season of Reacher sees Ritchson’s military veteran turned drifter turn up in a new US town or city and soon unintentionally uncover a criminal enterprise, corruption scandal, or political conspiracy. While Reacher’s many failed replacements tend to spend too much time fleshing out supporting characters, Prime Video’s action thriller keeps things simple, with few recurring characters between seasons.

One character the show made an exception for is Maria Sten’s Neagley, a fellow combat veteran with whom Reacher has a longstanding relationship. Reacher and Neagley have helped each other out of jams innumerable times over the years, and Neagley appears throughout the show to prove that Child’s protagonist isn’t a complete lone wolf. Now, she is set to star in a show of her own, and it is one that will challenge the very bedrock of the Prime Video franchise.

Reacher’s First Spinoff Series Makes One Massive Change To The Action Thriller Franchise Formula

Like Reacher, Neagley follows an unstoppable veteran who uses their combination of strength and smarts to take down criminals and corrupt public officials. Like Reacher, the spinoff will see its main character investigate a suspicious death linked to a larger conspiracy in its first outing. However, unlike Reacher, Neagley isn’t based on an existing novel. In a radical departure from the usual franchise formula, Neagley is an original story instead of a direct adaptation of a Child book.

This choice could reasonably ring some alarm bells for fans of Reacher, since the show has stuck religiously to the story of Child’s books throughout its first four seasons. That said, the change isn’t unheard of. Netflix’s The Night Agent is one of Reacher’s most critically acclaimed competitors in the small-screen spy thriller genre, and that show outgrew its source material after only one season.

While The Man in High Castle and The Handmaid’s Tale are both dystopian sci-fi shows rather than action thrillers, the fact that both of them began life as adaptations before telling original stories of their own should provide further reassurance to the spinoff’s creators. Prime Video’s Reacher spinoff, Neagley, doesn’t necessarily need a Child book to base its story on, provided the show feels true to the franchise.
