HBO Has Finally Found The True Successor To Succession

More than three years after Succession completed its run on HBO, a new and similarly prestigious corporate satire is arriving on the network to take its crown. This star-studded series will premiere on October 1, introducing us to the acrimonious divorce case between tech mogul Morgan Henderson and his wife.

The creation of Lupin and Hijack mastermind George Kay, War looks set to be a fast-talking, slickly-produced, darkly satirical comedy-drama fronted by British A-listers Dominic West and Sienna Miller. Although ostensibly within TV’s legal genre, it shares obvious parallels with Jesse Armstrong’s seminal masterpiece about familial betrayal, abhorrent personal greed, and the moral decadence of the super-wealthy.

Succession is widely considered one of the best HBO shows ever produced, so its conclusion in May 2023 left a gaping hole in the broadcaster’s schedule of new releases. While various other recent series have tried to fill the void, War has a better chance than all of them put together.

The broadcaster has every reason to think this upcoming prestige release has what it takes to justify comparisons with its forerunner, too.

Besides both shows featuring Pip Torrens among their respective casts, they’re each a prime example of modern-day TV satire, intricately constructed by a small-screen auteur hailing from England. Like Succession, War aims to shine an unflattering light on the billionaire class under the guise of a family drama, populated by several of the UK’s best screen performers.

Although other HBO series such as Industry and The White Lotus share certain things in common, none of them strike its tonal balance between pitch-black satire, immersive social realism, and vicious intrafamilial conflict. On the other hand, War appears set up to strike precisely this balance, albeit from a slightly different angle.

It certainly has the personnel to harbor lofty aspirations, even if few TV series in history are a match for Succession’s flawless four-season run. In any case, fans of the Roy family’s story should tune in from the start of October 2026, to see how War fares as its successor.
