Arteta calms worry around Arsenal contract extension

Mikel Arteta has eased any worries regarding his Arsenal future, stating he is “extremely happy” at the club.

Arteta has entered the final year of his contract at Arsenal, but has no plans to leave the Gunners just yet.

Arsenal ended their 22-year wait for a Premier League title last season, beating Manchester City to the trophy with just one game to spare.

Arteta has also won one FA Cup and two Community Shields, and the Spaniard could win the latter again when Arsenal face City on Sunday.

The 44-year-old took over at Emirates Stadium in December 2019 and has won 213 of his 353 games at the helm (D67 L73), while he also guided the Gunners to just their second-ever Champions League final last term.

Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke stated in May that a contract extension for Arteta was a priority, but the manager insists there is no rush on the matter.

“They [the fans] don’t have to worry about any of that because I want to be here, I’m extremely happy and I feel very grateful to work with the people I work with,” said Arteta about his contract talks.

“When we have the possibility, we will resolve that. That’s it.

“Everybody feels comfortable that the timing of the contract is not going to be an issue because my will certainly is to be here and I’m very happy here.

“My feeling from the club is the same one. That’s why everyone is doing things in a very organic way.”

Arteta won both of his Community Shield matches as a player (2014, 2015), and has won both so far as a manager (2020, 2023), with both managerial victories coming via a penalty shoot-out.

Only Manchester United (21) have won the Community Shield more often than Arsenal (17, including shared), with the Gunners winning each of their last five.

Arsenal have also won all three matches when reigning Premier League champions (1998, 2002, 2004).
