Dune Will Return In 2027 After Dune: Part 3

The Dune franchise isn’t over yet, and it will return in 2027 after Dune: Part Three. The world of Dune is one of the most extensive, richest, and most popular ones in sci-fi, and it all started in 1965 with Frank Herbert’s novel of the same name. Dune got its first movie adaptation in 1984 with David Lynch as director and Kyle MacLachlan starring as Paul Atreides. After two miniseries and other expansions to different types of media, Dune returned with Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 movie adaptation, starring Timothée Chalamet.

Villeneuve’s Dune was a critical and commercial success, winning different awards (such as six Oscars) and kicking off a new Dune saga. A sequel, simply titled Dune: Part Two, was released in 2024, and it covered the second half of Herbert’s novel. Dune 2 was an even bigger success, and it allowed the saga to branch out to TV. A couple of months after Dune 2’s release, the prequel TV series Dune: Prophecy was released on HBO, and it’s set 10,000 years before the events of the first movie.

Despite its source material (Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson’s Great Schools of Dune) and connection to Villeneuve’s movies, Dune: Prophecy received mixed reviews, but that didn’t stop it from being renewed for a second season. Dune: Prophecy will take a bit longer than expected to return, but it all points to it returning after Dune: Part Three comes out.

Dune: Prophecy Will Most Likely Return In 2027 With Season 2

Dune: Prophecy tells the story of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful social, political, and religious force, as well as an exclusive sisterhood, whose members train their minds and bodies for years to gain superhuman powers and abilities. Dune: Prophecy explores the origins of the Sisterhood, their rise to power, influence in the Imperium, and all the challenges and conflicts they had to overcome while Sisters Valya (Emily Watson) and Tula Harkonnen (Olivia Williams) do their best to maintain the Sisterhood and save the future of humanity.

The first season of Dune: Prophecy was praised for its performances, particularly those of Watson and Williams, and its story, though many critics and viewers felt it lacked the special touch of Villeneuve’s movies. Still, Dune: Prophecy had solid viewership numbers and a mixed-to-positive reception that was more than enough to grant it a second season. Season 2 of Dune: Prophecy has been in development for a while now, and it looks like it could finally arrive in 2027.

Dune: Prophecy season 2 entered production in November 2025 and wrapped in March 2026, and will be slightly longer than the first season, with eight episodes. Season 2 of Dune: Prophecy wasn’t included in HBO’s 2026 preview, which is strange given that it’s one of its biggest shows, and with a lot of post-production work needed, it will most likely arrive in 2027, meaning it will be released after Dune: Part Three, set for a December 2026 release.

A 2027 Release Will Be Beneficial For Dune: Prophecy

While it has definitely been a long wait for Dune: Prophecy season 2, it will greatly benefit from arriving in 2027 instead of late 2026. As mentioned above, Dune: Part Three will arrive in December 2026, and that’s enough competition for Prophecy, especially since they are part of the same franchise. Dune: Prophecy would also be facing a huge competitor over at HBO and HBO Max if it were to be released in late 2026, thanks to the Harry Potter TV series.

A 2027 release for Dune: Prophecy season 2 will give Villeneuve’s final Dune movie the time and space it deserves to succeed and complete its run, so Prophecy can later have its moment. Hopefully, Dune: Prophecy season 2 will be an improvement over the first season and will have learned from the past season’s mistakes, which will then allow it to continue for many more seasons.
