The Avengers have saved Earth countless times, but Marvel’s greatest heroes are far from unbeatable. Throughout decades of comics, several villains have managed to accomplish what seemed impossible by defeating Earth’s Mightiest Heroes outright. Sometimes those victories came through overwhelming power, while others relied on brilliant planning, advanced technology, or manipulating reality itself. Whatever the method, these battles proved that even the Avengers have limits.

Many of these defeats also became defining moments in Marvel history. Stories like Infinity Gauntlet, Secret Wars, and AXIS fundamentally reshaped the Marvel Universe, forcing the Avengers to recover from devastating losses before they could ultimately fight back. Here are five Marvel villains who didn’t just challenge the Avengers, they beat them.

Red Onslaught

Few Marvel villains have ever become as terrifying as Red Onslaught, the monstrous fusion of Red Skull and Professor Charles Xavier’s brain during the 2014 AXIS crossover. Following the events of Avengers vs. X-Men, Red Skull stole Professor X’s brain after Xavier’s death and grafted it onto himself, granting him one of the most powerful telepathic minds on Earth. Instead of simply becoming smarter, the villain evolved into a new version of the infamous Onslaught entity, combining Xavier’s psychic abilities with Red Skull’s hatred and cruelty.

The transformation elevated Red Skull into an Omega-level threat capable of mentally dominating heroes and civilians alike. Traditional physical attacks became nearly useless because the villain could manipulate minds on a global scale while unleashing devastating psychic assaults against anyone who opposed him.

When the Avengers confronted Red Onslaught, they quickly discovered that brute force was no solution. Heavy hitters including Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and the Scarlet Witch found themselves overwhelmed by the villain’s immense telepathic abilities. Entire teams struggled to coordinate once Red Onslaught began exploiting their fears and weaknesses.

The crisis soon expanded beyond the Avengers, forcing both heroes and villains across the Marvel Universe into an uneasy alliance. Even then, victory did not come through defeating Red Onslaught in a conventional fight. Instead, the heroes resorted to powerful magical spells that ultimately triggered the infamous moral inversion affecting dozens of Marvel characters. Although Red Onslaught was eventually stopped, the Avengers unquestionably lost the initial battle, demonstrating just how unstoppable the villain had become.

Ultron

Ultron has repeatedly proven that artificial intelligence can become one of humanity’s greatest nightmares. Created by Hank Pym as an advanced learning program, Ultron rapidly evolved beyond his creator’s control, developing self-awareness and a deep hatred for organic life. With every defeat, Ultron simply rebuilt himself stronger than before, often upgrading his body with nearly indestructible adamantium armor.

Unlike many Avengers villains who rely on overwhelming strength alone, Ultron constantly improves through logic and adaptation. He analyzes previous battles, corrects his weaknesses, creates robotic armies, and returns with increasingly sophisticated strategies. Every confrontation becomes more dangerous because Ultron literally learns from failure.

One of his earliest victories came after developing a vastly superior robotic body that allowed him to overpower multiple Avengers with alarming ease. His immense durability, devastating energy blasts, and computerized precision left Earth’s Mightiest Heroes struggling to inflict meaningful damage while Ultron systematically dismantled their defenses.

Stories such as Age of Ultron further cemented his reputation as one of Marvel’s most successful Avengers killers. Even when the heroes eventually reversed his victories through extraordinary circumstances involving time travel and alternate timelines, Ultron had already proven that defeating the Avengers was entirely possible. His relentless evolution ensures that every encounter begins with the heroes facing an even stronger enemy than before.

Kang the Conqueror

Long before becoming a major cinematic villain, Kang the Conqueror established himself as one of the Avengers’ greatest comic-book adversaries. First appearing as Kang in Avengers #8 (1964) after previously masquerading as the Egyptian ruler Rama-Tut, Nathaniel Richards combined futuristic technology with centuries of historical knowledge gained through time travel.

Kang’s greatest weapon has never been raw physical power but preparation. With access to advanced technology from the 40th century and an intimate understanding of history, he routinely manipulates events before the Avengers even realize they’re under attack. Every battle is carefully orchestrated long before the first punch is thrown.

In Avengers #8, Kang proved exactly why he became such a legendary threat. He defeated the assembled Avengers, imprisoned nearly the entire team, and demanded Earth’s unconditional surrender within 24 hours. Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and Giant-Man were effectively neutralized, leaving only Rick Jones and the Wasp free to resist.

Unable to overpower Kang directly, the remaining heroes relied on deception rather than combat. Pretending to cooperate with the conqueror allowed them to infiltrate his technology, free their teammates, and eventually drive Kang away. Although the Avengers ultimately prevented Earth’s conquest, Kang had already achieved what few villains ever managed by completely defeating and imprisoning the team during their first encounter.

Thanos

No Avengers defeat is more iconic than the one inflicted by Thanos. Whether in Marvel Comics or the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Mad Titan has repeatedly shown that he operates on a level few villains can match. His obsession with obtaining the Infinity Gauntlet transformed him into one of the most powerful beings in existence, capable of rewriting reality with a simple thought.

The comic version of Infinity Gauntlet differs significantly from the MCU adaptation. Rather than pursuing universal balance, Thanos assembled the six Infinity Gems to impress Mistress Death. Once she continued rejecting him despite his newfound omnipotence, he escalated his actions by erasing half of all life throughout the universe with a snap of his fingers.

Earth’s heroes stood virtually no chance against a fully empowered Thanos. The Avengers joined forces with cosmic allies, including Silver Surfer, Doctor Strange, and Adam Warlock in a desperate attempt to separate the Infinity Gauntlet from its wearer before he could eliminate them completely.

The plan failed spectacularly. Thanos effortlessly slaughtered or incapacitated many of the universe’s greatest champions while barely exerting himself. His eventual defeat was not caused by the Avengers overpowering him but by his own arrogance. Believing himself beyond mortal concerns, Thanos inadvertently left the Infinity Gauntlet vulnerable long enough for Nebula to seize it, forcing the Mad Titan to cooperate with Warlock and Strange to repair the catastrophic damage he had caused.

God Emperor Doom

Doctor Doom has always ranked among Marvel’s most dangerous villains, but Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars elevated him to an entirely different level. After the multiverse collapsed through a series of incursions, Doom stole the power of the Beyonders and used it to create Battleworld, a patchwork planet assembled from fragments of destroyed realities. As its absolute ruler, he became known as God Emperor Doom.

Possessing near-omniscient power, Doom reshaped existence according to his own vision. He wasn’t merely stronger than the Avengers, he effectively controlled reality itself. Entire universes bent to his will, and even cosmic beings acknowledged his unmatched authority over Battleworld.

The surviving Avengers attempted multiple rebellions against Doom’s rule, but each effort showed the impossible gap separating them from their opponent. Black Panther even acquired the Infinity Gauntlet during the final confrontation, giving readers hope that Marvel’s greatest heroes had finally found a weapon capable of matching Doom’s stolen power.

It still wasn’t enough. Throughout Secret Wars, God Emperor Doom effortlessly dispatched some of Marvel’s most powerful characters. In what was possibly the story’s most shocking moment, he casually ripped out Thanos’ skeleton with virtually no effort, eliminating the Mad Titan in seconds. Doom also killed a Phoenix Force-powered Cyclops and repeatedly crushed Avengers resistance before Reed Richards ultimately defeated him through intellect rather than force. For nearly the entirety of Secret Wars, the Avengers simply had no answer for Marvel’s most powerful version of Doctor Doom.
