Brand New Day’s Week 2 Box Office Is Better Than Most Movies’ Debuts

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is sticking around at No. 1.

The new Marvel Cinematic Universe movie features the return of Tom Holland as Peter Parker alongside an ensemble cast that includes Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Florence Pugh as Yelena, and Jon Bernthal as Punisher. The debut of 2026’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day was nothing short of extraordinary, kicking off with the best domestic opening weekend in history, and climbing past $1 billion worldwide on Tuesday. It eventually closed out its first full week in theaters by becoming the quickest movie to pass the $500 million milestone in North America.

Per Sony Pictures Entertainment, as of Saturday morning, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is projected to close out its sophomore weekend at the domestic box office with a 3-day total of $143 million. This marks the third-best domestic sophomore weekend in history (not adjusted for inflation), behind 2015’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ($149.2 million) and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($147.3 million), which are the two highest-grossing domestic releases of all time. Spider-Man has landed leaps and bounds ahead of the previous third-best title, which was 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War ($114.7 million).

Ultimately, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is heading toward a sophomore weekend drop of roughly 60%, which is not altogether uncommon for a superhero blockbuster. This drop shouldn’t affect its overall prospects, as 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home dropped a significantly worse 67.5%, it still became the eighth highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide. In fact, of the previous 37 MCU movies, 32 had drops of more than 50%, 13 had drops of more than 60%, and one (The Marvels) had a drop of more than 70%.

While it’s experiencing a sizable drop, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s record-breaking debut gave it a significant head start. In fact, its projected sophomore weekend haul is bigger than the domestic opening weekend grosses of all but two 2026 releases, namely Pixar’s Toy Story 5 ($159.7 million) and Spider-Man itself. Below, see a breakdown of the 10 biggest domestic opening weekends of 2026 so far:

Naturally, given this precedent, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has taken No. 1 at the domestic box office for the second weekend in a row. It considerably outpaced the smattering of new releases that arrived during the first full weekend of August, which include the high-concept romance One Night Only (which is projected to debut at No. 3 behind The Odyssey) and the belated comedy sequel Super Troopers 3 (which is expected to debut at No. 5).

Given Spider-Man‘s current momentum, it remains to be seen what title is ultimately able to topple it from its perch at the top of the domestic chart. During its third weekend, the biggest contender is probably The End of Oak Street, a sci-fi movie where Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor must protect their family from dinosaurs when their suburban neighborhood is mysteriously transported back in time. Even if Brand New Day drops more than 50%, Oak Street would probably have to debut above $60 million, which it may not be able to do, allowing the superhero movie to reign supreme.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day could have more trouble facing off against the horror sequel Insidious: Out of the Further during its fourth weekend, which is being followed by Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars and the long-awaited comedy Coyote vs. Acme the next weekend. However, if all of those movies underperform, Spider-Man could conquer the chart all throughout August, until the arrival of more promising September titles such as Practical Magic 2 and Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil.
