Wirtz ‘very excited for season two’ with Liverpool

Florian Wirtz expressed his excitement for “season two” at Liverpool after a disappointing debut campaign.

The 23-year-old joined the Reds last summer from Bayer Leverkusen for £100m (€125m), but failed to find any rhythm under Arne Slot.

Wirtz scored seven goals and provided eight assists in 49 games across all competitions as the Reds failed to build on their Premier League triumph in 2024-25.

The Germany international directly contributed to the fourth-most goals among Liverpool players last term (15), though did complete the second-most dribbles (63) and created the second-most chances (99).

However, the mood around the camp has improved following the appointment of Andoni Iraola, with Wirtz also set to play in a more preferred role.

“I mean, I was always more like a number 10. But I play where the manager puts me,” Wirtz told the club website.

“We’ve spoken about that as well. Let’s see what happens this season. I just can say that the training is really fun, I enjoyed every training [session] until now.

“We play a lot of games and possessions, and that’s exactly what I like. I just enjoyed it until now.

“I think we start from zero this season. Also here with this training camp, it’s a new start.

“We have a lot of things to do better this season and I’m very excited for season two.”

Wirtz is yet to feature in pre-season for Liverpool after representing Germany at the World Cup this summer.

Germany were knocked out in the round of 32 by Paraguay, which led to the departure of Julian Nagelsmann and the arrival of former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

“It’s very, very cool that he’s there now,” Wirtz added on Klopp.

“I’ve not spoken to him yet but a lot of people here at the club told me about him, that he is a fantastic guy.

“All of Liverpool loves him. So, I’m very excited to meet him in a few months.”
