A closer look at Prime Video’s book choices for Reacher‘s seasons 4 and 5 seems to reveal the show’s long-term adaptation formula. Instead of picking a random book from Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series, Prime Video adapted his debut novel, Killing Floor, for season 1. This made it hard not to wonder if the streaming service would chronologically follow the original book series in new seasons.
Interestingly, instead of following the original chronology, Prime Video’s Reacher directly jumped ahead to the eleventh book, Bad Luck & Trouble, in Reacher season 2. Similarly, in season 3, the show went back a few installments and adapted the seventh novel, Persuader.
In season 4, the Prime Video detective series is again jumping ahead to the thirteenth novel, Gone Tomorrow, before it adapts the twentieth book, Make Me, in season 5.
On the surface, it is hard not to believe that Prime Video’s Reacher is just randomly picking some of the best books from the original series and trying to bring them to the screen with each season. However, there is seemingly more to this approach than meets the eye. The show is seemingly adopting a very careful strategy to ensure viewers get to see all sides of Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher.
Prime Video’s Reacher Is Alternating Between Big & Small Town Settings
In season 1, Prime Video’s Reacher gave fans of the franchise exactly what they wanted: an intimate small-town mystery that allows Jack Reacher to put his brain and brawn on full display. Even Reacher’s relationship with Roscoe in season 1 felt incredibly organic because the central small town setting in Margrave allows the two characters to spend meaningful time together.
With season 2, however, the Prime Video series expanded its vision and scope by unfolding in New York City. Even the overarching conspiracy had far larger stakes as it involved the illegal trade of advanced military missiles capable. After season 2, Reacher returned to its small-town roots in season 3, where it followed a more personal but incredibly gripping journey for Jack Reacher.
By adapting Gone Tomorrow, Reacher season 4 is again poised to significantly broaden its scale. Unlike season 3’s contained setting, the story begins in New York City before evolving into a sprawling conspiracy that stretches across multiple locations.
In terms of stakes, season 3 will seemingly be the biggest installment in the Prime Video series as it involves everything from international espionage to political intrigue.
Reacher season 5’s confirmed book choice, Make Me, reveals that it marks the show’s return to a small-town setting. Like season 1’s Margrave, Lee Child’s Make Me takes place in a quaint town called Mother’s Rest and follows a smaller but compelling local conspiracy. A close look at all book choices made by Prime Video’s Reacher, so far, reveals an interesting pattern.
It seems quite evident that the Prime Video action thriller show is going back and forth between small and big towns, low and high stakes. This approach is actually genius because it allows the show to riff on all the strengths of its source material.
Reacher’s Adaptation Approach Perfectly Balances Its Best Aspects
Most action thriller shows are forced to constantly increase the stakes of their drama with each season. However, when it comes to Jack Reacher, viewers and readers admire his small-town crime-solving endeavors as much as his sprawling conspiracies with global consequences.
Owing to this, it makes sense that the Prime Video series is not completely leaving the small-town settings behind while still raising the stakes of the overarching drama with each alternate season.
One of the biggest reasons why Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books work so incredibly well is that they almost allow readers to live the titular character’s nomadic lifestyle. They immerse the reader in his hobo lifestyle and make one wonder what the future holds for him as he continues his travels across the United States.

The Prime Video series is also riffing on the same sense of unpredictability by showing how Jack Reacher may not always encounter high-stakes conspiracies.
