Avengers: Endgame‘s best and most beloved moment is getting an update this year that could enhance or sabotage the MCU scene in retrospect. With an absence of Avengers movies since 2019, Endgame‘s legacy has become even more pronounced over the course of the last 7 years, further cementing the prominence of a movie that was already a colossal entity thanks to its staggering box office total.

As such, the MCU timeline has understandably spent much of the past near decade navigating around how the franchise will handle Endgame and its mythos in its wake, with a range of Marvel movies and shows making a multitude of references to it, and much of the early Multiverse Saga revolving around the ramifications and knock-on effects of the last leg of the prior Infinity Saga and its Endgame conclusion.

Now, Avengers: Endgame‘s biggest moment has been confirmed to be getting a new update as a result of Avengers: Doomsday and its story clearly connecting to it. Though this is a tantalizing prospect, it’s also one that carries some risks as a result of the way it seems set to retroactively change the significance of this scene – much in the way the MCU has previously interacted with the events of Endgame, such as Secret Invasion‘s controversial reveal of the Harvest serum taken from the Battle of Earth.

Avengers: Endgame’s Big Mjolnir Moment Has Already Been Confirmed For An Avengers: Doomsday Update Thanks To The Trailers

Avengers: Endgame‘s climactic moment of Steve Rogers taking on Mjolnir as a weapon and then providing the rally cry of “Avengers Assemble!” in the film’s final battle is easily one of the most iconic and unforgettable moments in the MCU’s biggest movie of all time – referencing the similarly iconic comic moment, and paying off the years-old setup of the character first being suggested to be worthy of the hammer in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Avengers: Doomsday‘s trailer has already shown the upcoming film will further delve into this storyline, with a shot showing a character who appears to be Steve Rogers – though theories have arisen he may be someone else – holding the mythical weapon in a clear reference to the Endgame moment.

Whether the character takes Mjolnir to show Thor he’s the real deal or for some other purpose is not yet clear, but whatever happens in this scene will retroactively change how the Avengers: Endgame moment appears, too, since the two scenes are set to be closely associated for viewers, and since this will be the only other time we’ve seen Rogers (or someone who looks like him here) using Mjolnir in the MCU.

Avengers: Doomsday’s Mjolnir Moment Has Some Major Risks & Rewards For The MCU

Knowing that the iconic Avengers: Endgame battle scene is to be used as setup for an Avengers: Doomsday moment makes this impending segment of the movie all the more exciting, and could well pay off for Doomsday massively, if it’s able to build on its connection to Endgame in a way that works in Doomsday as well for its own story.

However, it’s a decision that carries some risks, too, as having the Doomsday scene either be unsatisfying in how it explores Rogers’ connection with Mjolnir or otherwise feel like needless fan service could retroactively taint the legacy of the Endgame moment in retrospect. This also draws invitation for audiences to compare Endgame and Doomsday even more closely, which may not be something that could go in Doomsday‘s favor, given the lasting reputation of the 2019 MCU release.

As such, it will be interesting to see how Avengers: Doomsday handles this scene when the actual movie debuts, and how this is received by viewers, since it runs the chances of either alienating audiences, or engaging them further while also tying the upcoming MCU movie closer to Avengers: Endgame, bolstering its own reputation via its link to one of the most successful and well-regarded superhero movies of all time.
