Fernandes marks Spurs bow with stunning volley

Mateus Fernandes marked his first game for Tottenham with a stunning goal as they beat MK Dons 1-0 in a pre-season friendly.

Fernandes, signed from West Ham for a reported £85million, was named in the starting XI for the match, as was fellow midfielder Sandro Tonali, who joined in a £100m deal from Newcastle United.

And Fernandes made his unofficial debut one to remember as he opened the scoring for Roberto De Zerbi’s side in the third minute.

He found the top-right corner with a superb volley from just outside the area after MK Dons goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray punched a corner into his path.

Tottenham, who made 10 substitutions at half-time, failed to add to their lead in the second half, which saw goalkeeper Martin Dubravka make his debut.

Midfielder Lucas Bergvall, linked with both Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, did not feature in the game.

Tottenham now head on a tour of New Zealand and Australia, with their next pre-season game seeing them face Auckland FC on Sunday.
