How was your weekend? A few months ago, a CoJ reader named Molly asked if we could share weekend recaps now and again, so here’s mine, and please share yours in the comments, if you’d like…

My honorary niece Grace, who lives in England, is spending the summer doing medical research in New York — I’m so happy she’s here! Since Saturday was very rainy, we took her to Art of Play, a magic and games store in Brooklyn Heights.

We loved playing with the little puzzles. If you figure one out, the shop owner rings a bell, which felt like peak excitement to a 13-year-old, 16-year-old, 23-year-old, and 47-year-old.

Later, I saw this funny New Yorker comic…

..and met up with Alison, who, like the amazing weirdo she is, now carries a trash grabber wherever she goes. “People who pass by sometimes compare me to David Sedaris,” she laughs. “But it’s a small way to give back to the neighborhood.” (Side note: How cute is her skirt?)

We then went to our friends’ apartment to watch England play in the World Cup — what a game, gahhh!!! (This Onion headline made me laugh.)

Finally, and at long last, Freddie got back from a week-long cruise with his extended family.

We laughed that every phone call from the ship felt like this: “I’ll come back to you, I promise!” Also, did you know that actress Sonya Walger, who played Penny, is also the author of the incredible novel Lion and is ALSO a Cup of Jo reader???? How amazing is that?!!
