Of all the weird and wonderful creatures that appear throughout the Harry Potter novels, few are more frightening than the basilisk. The seemingly endless snake stalks the titular hero in the second book in the series, Chamber of Secrets, and even Hagrid’s giant spider Aragog is terrified of it.

Though Harry does eventually come out on top in a 1v1 against the beast, thanks to some clutch help from Dumbledore’s phoenix, Fawkes, that was far from the start of the creature’s story. Now, a new mod takes players back into the depths of the chamber, and it’s well worth downloading if you’re playing through the game once again.

Over on Curse Forge, you should be able to find the download page for The Chamber of Secrets mod, which has just been made available for the current version of the game. In sharing what fans can expect if they do decide to give it a go, the developer shared the following insight:

“Chamber of Secrets is a dark, story-focused dungeon mod that sends players deep below the castle to uncover a place built not just to hide a monster, but to imprison, test, and destroy. Fight through ancient sewers, creature-infested tunnels, caverns, and abandoned Slytherin sanctums as you piece together the horrifying truth hidden beneath Hogwarts.

“With custom environments, atmospheric exploration, environmental storytelling, and intense encounters, this mod reimagines the Chamber as something far larger and far more terrifying than legend ever told. Some secrets were buried for a reason.”

It’s a really cool mod that essentially allows you to take the steps of Harry Potter, around 100 years before he gets the chance to do so. Though this obviously breaks the lore in a pretty major way, it doesn’t really matter in this context, and having the opportunity to explore such an exciting location is a difficult opportunity to pass up.

Players have already started taking on the basilisk, including over on Reddit, where one player shared confirmation of their victory over the beast. Many are already stating their intention to download it and give it a go for themselves in the responses, though others remain unsure why anyone would want to put themselves in that situation.

The in-development Hogwarts Legacy sequel is set to closely follow the upcoming HBO adaptation of the original novels. That means we’re likely in for a very different experience, and it might not be too long before we get to fight creatures like the basilisk in an official release by the developer.
