40 years after the original Top Gun, the franchise is still flying high, significantly buoyed by the 2022 release of Top Gun: Maverick. Decades later, the formula of combining Tom Cruise movie magic with aerial acrobatics remains uniquely compelling, and Maverick pushed the concept to even greater heights than before.
It’s since been confirmed that Tom Cruise will return for yet another Top Gun film — good luck living up to Maverick with that one. We won’t have to wait that long to see some new Top Gun action, though, as a new trailer from a surprising source reveals a more imminent release.
The popular FPS game Battlefield 6 dropped a trailer for its Season 4 naval update yesterday on YouTube, and it includes a surprising tease for a Top Gun collaboration. After roughly two minutes of in-game action, the trailer cuts to a recreation of footage from Top Gun, showing an F-14 preparing to take off.
While the footage itself could easily be taken as just a brief homage, it’s both accompanied by a brief swell of Top Gun‘s synth-heavy soundtrack and placed as the trailer’s concluding moment. Consequently, it seems like an obvious official tease for an actual collaboration with the franchise, although what exactly that will entail remains to be seen.
This isn’t Top Gun‘s first video game collaboration, as it’s previously crossed over with the flight-focused games Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown and Microsoft Flight Simulator. There’s also a long history of official Top Gun tie-in games, starting with a dogfighting simulator on 80s home computers like the Atari ST and Commodore 64.
All the same, this could be a pretty exciting addition to the lineup. The Battlefield series is known for its large-scale, cinematic battles, with aerial stunts having contributed to some of the most iconic gameplay moments over the years. A Top Gun collab should be one of the best ways to let players take on Maverick’s death-defying nature, and the F-14 Tomcat makes a nice addition to the game even if you’re not a Top Gun fan. More broadly, the return of two-seater jets should also provide a lot of fun.
Hopefully, the Top Gun crossover will end up bringing some substantial content to Battlefield 6 and not just a few tie-in cosmetics. Either way, we should find out soon, as Season 4 is set to launch on July 21.
