It is hard to believe that, despite its popularity and many fans considering it to be Rockstar Games’ magnum opus (at least until the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI later this year), Red Dead Redemption 2 has not yet received a next-gen update.

Launching back in 2018 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the most recent entry in the Red Dead franchise has since arrived on the PC, as well as now being accessible on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. However, the only reason this is possible is thanks to backwards compatibility as Rockstar has yet to release next-gen ports for the newer consoles.

As such, despite it hurtling towards its 10th anniversary, Red Dead Redemption 2 is still capped at 30FPS, even whilst playing on current hardware. Despite rumors of next-gen remasters and ports being in the works, Rockstar is yet to confirm them, so, for now, we are having to rely on backwards compatibility and 30FPS in order to enjoy our time on the American Frontier.

That being said, there is a way to see what Red Dead Redemption 2 could look like if it was no longer capped at 30FPS, and this comes courtesy of Digital Foundry on YouTube. Following a PlayStation 5 hack that was discovered back in 2024, games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as other hits such as Arkham Knight, Just Cause 3, and more, can now be experienced at 60FPS.

“Locked to older firmwares, PlayStation 5 has been hacked, opening the door to a range of 60fps mods that transform some of PlayStation 4’s best games when played under backwards compatibility,” the video description reads. “Let’s be clear here – these mods do not work on unexploited, retail consoles. Leading modder Illusion worked with Digital Foundry to show us how good these games look – and why Sony and third-party publishers might consider an official Xbox-style FPS Boost program for PlayStation 5.”

As a result, Digital Foundry has put together short videos of these video games at 60FPS, and it is clear to see the difference. There is no denying that Red Dead Redemption 2 is already a stunning game, but its true potential comes alive now that it is no longer capped at 30FPS.

As such, fans took to the comments to share their thoughts on the new-and-improved Red Dead Redemption 2.

“Still so weird that there is not a RDR2 60 FPS Patch by Rockstar,” the top comment reads. Another said, “Out of all the games I’ve played on my PS5, RDR2 and Bloodborne are the two that absolutely need and deserve a 60fps patch. 4K is cool and a native PS5 version of either would be welcome, but I’d be very happy with just a patch.”

Finally, with one person adding, “My heart skipped a beat thinking we got a patch for RDR2….” it is clear what fans want. Hopefully, once Rockstar has finally launched Grand Theft Auto VI later this year, it will finally turn its attention back to Red Dead Redemption 2 and that long-awaited patch.
